What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 
This unit is designed to introduce you to the foundational principles and processes of bioscience. Through module content, workshops, and activities, you will learn the basics of human anatomy and physiology and discover how each of the body systems work together to sustain life. You will also explore fundamental concepts in microbiology and biochemistry and learn how interactions at the cellular and chemical levels can affect the body as a whole. You will develop practical research, communication, and referencing skills through engagement with a range of academic sources. At the end of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate key concepts in bioscience relevant to the health professions.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Assessment Task 1: AT1: MyLO Quizzes
Task Description:
In weeks 2 - 11 (inclusive) there will be a weekly MyLO quiz. Each quiz will include a mix of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and matching questions on the content covered in the modules.

Assessment Task 2: AT2: Practical Workbook
Task Description:
The practical workbook contains three activities that allow you to explore the bioscience concepts covered in the content. These activities must be completed on your own, but there will be opportunities for support and discussion in the workshops.

You will:
- Complete the practical activities and record data
- Reflect on your results
- Explain your results in relation to bioscience concepts using appropriate terminology and referencing.

Activity length varies for each task, from one to three hours.

Assessment Task 3: AT3: Disease Investigation
Task Description:
You will choose a pathogen discussed in the content and conduct some research on it. Using this information, you will answer a number of questions in a worksheet, including where the pathogen is found, which disease it causes in humans, and how the disease is transmitted. You will also cover methods to prevent or reduce the transmission, aligning with evidence-based nursing practices.

Assessment Task 4: AT4: Research Presentation
Task Description:
You will prepare and record a 7-minute PowerPoint presentation on the physiological processes that occur in the body during an activity: sleeping, eating, or exercising. You will choose three body systems to focus on and, for each, research one short-term physiological response occurring during the activity and one long-term effect of repeat engagement in that activity. You will present your findings using the provided template and record the presentation with an embedded video (Cameo) and narration. You will use scientific terminology and supporting information from scholarly sources to support your claims. The presentation will assess your understanding and application of unit concepts and your ability to communication scientific information clearly, so the use of GenAI is not permitted for this assignment. Further guidance will be provided through unit content and assessment instructions.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
