What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
In this unit, you will take your first steps into professional psychological practice by working with a simulated client in a structured placement environment. Under supervision, you will conduct an intake interview, develop a case formulation, collaboratively set treatment goals, and implement evidence-based interventions. You will also explore ethical and professional issues relevant to practice and begin developing your professional identity. Learning activities include role play, simulated client sessions, group supervision, and guided self-reflection. This unit is designed to build your foundational skills and prepare you for future placement experiences.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1
Apply foundational knowledge of psychological theories, ethics, and cultural frameworks to inform psychology practice in a simulated context.
2
Implement evidence-based psychological interventions to enhance client treatment outcomes.
3
Integrate professional and ethical behaviour in all aspects of simulated practice to enhance client safety.
4
Reflect on personal and professional development to identify strengths and areas for continued growth.

Alterations as a result of student feedback
Based on student feedback, changes have been made to the structure of assessment tasks providing students with more formal assessment opportunities before the final summative assessment.
As always, the teaching team will greatly appreciate your feedback both informally during the delivery of the unit in 2026, and formally through the University of Tasmania’s Unit Survey following your completion of the unit.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online or includes online activities, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline or MyLO, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

This unit aims to simulate the real world of psychology practice as closely as possible. To this end, when you come to class each week, you will be coming “to work” in a fictitious organisation providing psychological intervention to clients.
Classes will involve some formal lectures, however, for most of the unit you will be working in pairs to provide therapy sessions to a client (the other half of your pair). You will be required to play the part of a psychologist and a client. Each pair will be provided with a scenario that will form the basis of the role-play. When in role-play, you will be observed regularly, and role-plays will be interrupted for feedback and demonstration to be provided. While playing the role of the psychologist, you are required to complete file notes each week after seeing the client. The file will be reviewed, and feedback given. You are also required to complete a reflective practice journal each week, attend weekly group supervision meetings.
You are expected to attend 100% of all classes.
In this unit, your active engagement will be monitored in the following way:
1. Completion of simulated activities.
2. Completion of online tasks.
3. Attendance in class.
4. Completion of assessment tasks.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes.
Your grade will be determined in the following way:
All assessments within the Postgraduate Professional Training Programs at the University of Tasmania adhere to an ungraded pass profile. Similarly, your academic transcript will use this same grading system.
This means all assessable work will be graded as either UP (ungraded pass) or NN (fail grade); A grade of NN on an assessment task indicates you need to continue towards achieving that competency. You are required to achieve a UP on your end of placement assessment in order to successfully pass this unit of study. Please note that to achieve a UP grade on an assessment piece you must pass all criteria for the assessment.
At the end of semester you may receive a grade of AO (assessment ongoing). An AO grade is used when some assessment tasks for the unit have not been completed at the end of or when resubmissions are needed before a mark can be finalised.
Marks are reviewed by the Unit Coordinator and School of Psychological Sciences Assessment Committee and may be adjusted to ensure fairness, consistency, and appropriateness before the final marks and grades are assigned in accordance with University policy and the specified unit assessment. Grades and marks are also reviewed by the Health Assessors’ Committee.
Note: In order to obtain a full passing grade in this unit, you must submit and achieve a UP grade on all competencies on the End of Placement Competency Assessment.
Academic progress review
The results for this unit may be included in a review of your academic progress. For information about progress reviews and what they mean for all students, see Academic Progress Review in the Student Portal.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.
Academic integrity
Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. To find out the referencing style for this unit, see the assessment information in the MyLO site, or contact your teaching staff. For more detail about Academic Integrity, see
Important Guidelines & Support.
Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.

Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
