What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
In this unit, higher level workplace managers/supervisors will develop higher order decision making skills and capabilities required of critical incident response operational leadership in increasingly complex social, cultural, and economic environments. This is because critical incidents are often dynamic and require operational commanders to adapt responses as incidents unfold over time, simultaneously focusing on response and recovery, and to do this within the multifarious, diverse constraints of relevant legislation, policies, and best practice. Students will practice strategic decision making around managing response to, and ongoing recovery of, critical incidents because they are responsible for commanding these responses for their organisations. Importantly, they will also develop intrapersonal skills by critically analysing and reflecting upon their own, and others’, critical incident response practices to ensure they role model ethical leadership in their own critical incident response and recovery. They will employ interpersonal skills in their collaborations with other government and community stakeholders to build resilient communities and respond appropriately when required through command, control, and coordination principles. Students will develop these interpersonal and intrapersonal skills in collaborative, ethical ways to synthesise their performance and the issues facing critical incident response leaders today.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Workshop (On Campus)
All students enrolled in this unit will participate in a seven-day face to face intensive course where they will engage in interactive workshops for up to 6.5 hours per day from a range of government, university, police, and community stakeholders.

Students will engage in a 50 minute online tutorial using Microsoft Teams. This tutorial will be focused on workshopping each of the assignments to support academic literacy skill development.

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. Assessment details
Assessment Task 1: Operational Capability Assessment
Task Description:
Scenario Participation and Incident Management
As part of this course, you will engage in a scenario requiring you to make supervisory decisions to manage an unfolding incident. You will assume the role of an Acting Inspector at a Police Station, equipped with various resources to utilise throughout the incident.

Incident Response Stage
During this stage, you will receive information via VKT. You will operate from a small office with access to a laptop and monitors. Scenario injects will be communicated through a Teams video meeting. Note that assessors will not be present in the room with you.

Management Response Stage
Following the incident response, the scenario will transition into a management response stage. You will receive a final inject from VKT and have time to consider the information and prepare your response. You will need to demonstrate how you would manage and take command of the scene. During this stage, you will communicate directly with the assessors present in the room.

Final Briefing
You will conclude by providing a briefing to the Commander (one of the assessors).

Performance Review & Feedback
Your performance will be recorded and made available for a limited time to facilitate personal review and self-reflection. Written feedback from your assessors will be provided via online learning within 24-48 hours after your assessment day

Assessment Task 2: Leadership in the Workplace
Task Description:
You will provide a written report on how you applied sound leadership practices in handling one (1) documented incident within your team. The incident that you choose must be resolved in order for reflection to occur and be commented on.

This may include but is not limited to:
- Conflict resolution
- Performance Management
- Internally raised matter (Blue Team)
- Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace

Within your report you will be required to:
• summarise the incident chosen;
• critically analyse the actions you took and align them with leadership elements in the Capabilities Profile;
• Provide evidence of the incident and actions. Where required to ensure confidentiality, provided only a reference number to relevant documents.

A report template is provided for you to complete for submission.

N.B. The incident that you choose must be dated within 12 months before the course start date.

Assessment Task 3: Scenario Response Essay
Task Description:
You will be provided with information regarding an emergency scenario on the MyLO unit site and you will need to develop and submit an essay addressing this scenario. You will apply key emergency management documentation as a strategic manager within Tasmania Police. You will discuss strategic considerations, decisions, and actions of Tasmania Police, and the tactical management of the specific problem, and your response will be informed by relevant legislation, policy and case studies relating to past emergencies.

Assessment Task 4: Critical analysis of critical incident response
Task Description:
You will critically analyse the police response to a critical incident or emergency. Choose and reflect on any police critical incident or emergency from your own experience or that you are familiar with. Alternatively, you can choose any police critical incident or emergency that you want from national or international examples. Proper academic referencing is required for this assignment.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
