Unit Outline

This unit is designed to help you prepare for and build confidence in your own unique transition from student to registered nurse. The content invites you to be reflective of who you are, your emerging professional identity and the requirements you have for maintaining your ‘Capability’ as a registered nurse across your career. You will identify elements that underpin a culture of safety and quality, including engaging in different dimensions of leadership, scope of practice, decision making, delegation and notifications, with a focus on application to practice as a graduate nurse. The concepts of self-care, work-life balance and resilience will be explored, along with the importance of adopting positive, collaborative working relationships You will engage with resources to assist you to apply for graduate positions in differing health care organisations, collecting evidence of your developing capabilities using an ePorftolio. You will develop confidence in communicating your capabilities and professional attributes in practical, applied ways such as application writing and interviewing.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Critically reflect on your future role as a capable, safe, professional registered nurse and the requirements to maintain capability throughout your career.
2	Critique and prepare for the role of the graduate registered nurse through engagement in various dimensions of leadership, decision-making, scope of practice and delegation.
3	Discuss and apply safety and quality in health care through application to nursing practice.
4	Model professional written and verbal communication skills required by a registered nurse.

Assessment Task 1: Critical Self- Reflection

Task Description:

In this task, you are required to complete a self-reflection activity. The critical questions will support you to articulate your emerging professional identity and to demonstrate an applied understanding of ‘capability’ as a new graduate nurse.

Assessment Task 2: Nursing Conference Presentation

Task Description:

In this assessment task you will be presenting to the School of Nursing Conference, an ‘in-class’ educational event.

Assessment Task 3: Interview Response

Task Description:

In this assessment task, you will be participating in a live online ‘practice’ interview for a graduate position. To undertake this task, you will need to draw on your PEP experiences and the unit content.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
