What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with awe and inspiration, enjoyment, and a wealth of ecosystem and geosystem services. In this unit, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person and online), you will be immersed in the practices of geoconservation and 'geotourism'. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to: - Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as 'units' of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society, - Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment - Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production - Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection - Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods. - Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences and stakeholders. Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, restore degraded environments, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. All skills and knowledge required to successfully complete KGA527 are developed within the unit. Online students should note that there is a requirement for some 'live' online participation in order to complete 'assurance of learning' assessment tasks.

In 2025, KGA527 students were very satisfied with this unit. It was suggested that the assignments could occur in a different order, so we have chosen to do this in 2026. We have also provided descriptions of our expectations in assessment criteria that align with graduate employability skills. We hope that you enjoy KGA527 this year, and welcome your feedback.

Fieldwork
An online virtual field trip lead by instructors and curators to assist you with developing field inventory and condition monitoring skills.

This online virtual journey has been designed specifically for you. You will complete this task live online, to satisfy the requirements for AT2. There is likely to be more than one opportunity to complete the online task during the week due to replicate scheduling in KGA327. At least one opportunity will be after hours, another on the weekend.

Clinical or Professional Practice
A two-day series of professional training sessions and seminars will be held in two sessions on Saturday and Sunday March 28th and 29th 2026. These assist you to develop skills similar to students attending KGA527 camp, including data capture for AT2.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online or includes online activities, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline or MyLO, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.
 
All KGA527 students are expected to attend either the field trips/camp or the online equivalents. These are held after hours or on weekends for your convenience, and are indicated in the timetable and on MyLO. Attendance at the camp requires a payment of $150 to cover accommodation and food costs. We understand that this cost may not be within your budget, and if so, we suggest that you may wish to attend the online sessions on the same weekend instead. 
Field trip and camp activities, and the online versions of these, are associated with assessment tasks 1 and 2, hurdle tasks.

Assessment details
Assessment Task 1: AT1: Data collection
Task Description:
Environmental data collection forms part of the inventory phase of geoconservation. In this assessment task, you will either attend a field trip or night online class in week 3, to collect data about geodiversity in a protected area. Using the ESRI FieldMaps mobile application, you will collect data from three locations, including measurements and in-field photos or screenshots (for online students). You will submit your data collection for three sites to a group inventory map, and for evaluation.

Submit your work within the ESRI/ArcGIS Field Maps app according to the site/collector ID instructions on MyLO. Upload your collection ID numbers on MyLO so that your work can be graded.
Task Length:
Three completed data entries into a mobile collection app over an observation and training period of approximately 5 hours.

Assessment Task 2: AT2: Geotrail or Heritage Trail
Task Description:
You are required to produce a four-stop geotrail or heritage trail, of your own design, featuring the following components in a word document:
1. Trail purpose and mode
2. Trail layout/location
3. Trail features and valorisation
4. Constraints analysis for the trail - MCDA and/or GIS and planning implications
5. Trail 'presentation' by way of GIS output

Data collection for this assessment will occur on a weekend clearly indicated within the unit schedule as a field camp and/or online workshop, which you should choose based on your personal preference and circumstances. You will need to read/prepare for approximately 1 hour prior to the commencement of this assessment so as to make a choice between the types of trail purposes prior to commencing the task.

Use provided template on MyLO to submit your trail. You may also need to submit files in the Field Maps app, consult your camp/online workshop instructor after the data collection activity if unsure.

Assessment Task 3: AT3: Nomination to a (Geo)heritage Register
Task Description:
You are required to submit a mock nomination of a primary geosite or a geodiversity site or an item of ex situ geoheritage of natural (and - if justified - cultural) value.

This must be a place that has never been listed on a conservation inventory for its geodiversity, geoheritage or geosystem service value previously. Specific instructions on how to identify 'your own' site/feature will be provided on MyLO.

Via an online web-form that can be accessed multiple times up until the due date, you will be required to answer a series of questions about your chosen site or item. These include site/item description, values and significance assessment, threat assessment, locations, management goals and reference and supporting materials. Some parts of the form will require you to upload additional materials to support your nomination, such as maps or images from the web.

This task requires that you type into a 'webform' accessed via a MyLO 'quiz'. It is open from day 1 of semester, you can enter and exit, saving your work as often as you like, until the due date.

1200 words plus graphical and photographic appendices and tables in online web-form format with internal character limits for various sections.

Assessment Task 4: AT4: Video Experience
Task Description:
Using video software supplied to you in class, produce a five-minute video explaining geoconservation issue (especially landscape conservation or recreation issues). Communicate the messages in the video using language that a person with a generalist, non-specialist knowledge would be able to understand. Integrate a range of geographical, geospatial and geoconservation techniques into the video, demonstrating your proficiency in using these throughout the semester, apply these to an issue of your choice.
Video production software provided now enables you to be able to produce highly sophisticated media productions. Use of generative AI to create voiceovers or to generate primary media content is not permitted in this task, although you are permitted to use generative AI to create accompanying music, enhance transitions between video segments, or to animate, for instance, a landscape process - provided that you consult the AI checklist online and clearly indicate where AI has been used.

Please use the provided Echo360 student video upload instructions to lodge your work. Free video production software is available for this task. Note the TUESDAY submission date.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater and complete any hurdle tasks (1) and complete more than 75% of the assessment tasks in this unit (2). 
  1. In KGA527, the ‘assurance of learning’ hurdle tasks are: AT1 data collection inventory and the AT2 GeoTrail. Please note that attendance at the field trip & camp, or online equivalent offerings, is necessary to complete these tasks. 
  2. According to the Assessment and Results procedure, students who have not made a legitimate attempt to complete more than 75% of the unit assessment by weighting, are not eligible for a passing grade - even if their score is close to or more than 50% based on the tasks already completed. Please therefore check the weightings of assessments carefully and contact us on the MyLO discussion board if you need more clarity.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
