Unit Outline

This unit explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The unit will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Analyse and reflect critically on the impact of illness and disability on creativity and the role of creative work as expression and coping mechanisms
2	Synthesise knowledge, research skills, and cultural awareness to inform empathetic person-centred care employing the creative arts
3	Propose solutions to problems in real-life scenarios of the use of creative arts to promote health and wellbeing
4	Communicate effectively to general and specialist audiences demonstrating creativity and interdisciplinary understandings of the interrelationships between creative arts, health and wellbeing.

Assessment Task 1: Quizzes

Task Description:

Two online multiple choice formative quizzes based on weekly learning materials through the unit. Quiz 1 is due in week 6, Quiz 2 is due during the examination period

Assessment Task 2: Poster

Task Description:

Create a poster that contextualises and provides a close reading of a selected creative work, which provides insights into the artist/creator’s response to an illness or disability of their own, or another individual or group.

Assessment Task 4: Proposal

Task Description:

Apply knowledge and understandings gained through course materials and research to argue for the use of specific creative works in a supportive and culturally appropriate way to educate the general public about the experience of people living with a specific illness and/or disability.

2000 words and video pitch (2-3 min duration)

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
