Unit Outline

This unit addresses the communication needs of students, current and intending professionals required to speak in presentation contexts. Participants will experience specific vocal and physical skills in the presentation of dynamic and highly focused material and tasks. Various delivery techniques and strategies enable participants to reach an identified or intended audience with impact and purpose. How to address performance anxiety and transfer these skills to professional contexts is part of the study profile of this unit. The skills-based and experiential learning approach supports and provides the confidence necessary to present in front of an audience to facilitate professional development.

Assessment details

Assessment Task 1: Presentation 1

Task Description:

Prepare and present a 3-minute talk (no longer than 4 minutes) on a topic you are passionate about, using structured preparation, undertaking rehearsal to refine your use of voice and gesture. This presentation is a video presentation, without the use of slides – but
props will be permitted in consultation with teaching staff. For this assessment, criteria 1 and 2 are more heavily weighted.

Task Length:

3 minutes, 30 seconds of variance (+ or ‐) is allowed without penalty. Marks will be deducted proportionately for talks that are over or under this range. At 4 minutes, speakers will be asked to stop.

Assessment Task 2: Presentation 2

Task Description:

Prepare and present a talk to a time limit of 3 minutes on a topic that seems technical, professional or discipline specific. Your topic should aim to communicate a complex idea, process or issue to a generalist audience. You should demonstrate structured preparation, considered use of visual material, and rehearsal to refine voice and gesture.
For this presentation, you may use slides ‐ you have the option in this assessment:
a) You can follow the 3 Minute Thesis guidelines and use a single slide, or
b) You can use up to 3 slides.
You will upload your slides to a shared, online power point file, and each speaker will have a title slide with their name and title of their talk. The title slides is not included in the slide count.

No longer than 3 minutes, and no shorter than 2 ½ minutes.

Assessment Task 3: Self-assessment

Task Description:

You will reflect on your presentation and assess your progress in physical and vocal work in relation to the specific tasks and goals set at the beginning of the unit.
Content must include personal vocal and physical observations in relation to class exercises, process, and presentation and setting goals for future presentations.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
