What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This unit builds skills in industry-relevant mechanical design and simulation techniques. This is done through specific industry focused design projects developing engineering solutions satisfying project briefs and design constraints. The focus is on utilising design, modelling and simulation methods in design of mechanical system components and systems, including for optimization of aspects such as form and function, mechanical compatibility, loading and stress, energy transfer, fluid-structure interaction and vibrations. Consideration will be given to satisfying relevant standards and minimum levels of safety. Findings will be delivered through professional engineering and multimedia-enhanced reports and presentations reporting on design simulation and analysis methods and techniques and design simulation outcomes.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Develop in-depth computer-based mechanical models and simulations to design and optimise industry-relevant mechanical components and systems.

Analyse and optimise mechanical components and systems by applying computer-based design simulation methods to meet relevant design specifications and performance criteria.
3
Critically evaluate design simulation methods and outcomes through multimedia-enhanced professional engineering reports and presentations.

Assessment Task 1: Foundation skills - design simulation
Task Description:
Report comprising solutions to selected foundation design simulation tutorials demonstrating development of foundation skills in mechanical design simulation.

GenAI use permitted (with acknowledgement) in an assistive role for researching the topic and supporting the writing process in terms of structure and type of content to include. Please refer to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) information section in the student portal for further information about using genAI.
Task Length:
Maximum 8 pages plus appendices.

Assessment Task 2: Project Presentation
Task Description:
Project presentation: Presenters are to introduce their problem and provide a background leading up to the project aims, performance criteria and requirements for simulation and analysis. The simulation methods are to be outlined including methods for analysis and presentation of results. Current progress and results are to be shown.

Assessment Task 3: Project Final Report
Task Description:
Report on implementing and applying modelling and simulation methods to the mechanical design simulation topic, using the simulation to explore various design options, considering a range of operating scenarios, conducting system optimisation studies and developing a preferred design.

Individualisation of assessment will be done utilising peer assessment

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
To pass ILO1 your aggregate mark on the on the components of Foundation Skills – Design Simulation report and the Project Presentation assessing ILO1 weighted according to their contribution to the final mark, must be greater than or equal to 50%.
To pass ILO2 your aggregate mark on the components of the Foundation Skills – Design Simulation report and the Project Final Report assessing ILO2 weighted according to their contribution to the final mark, must be greater than or equal to 50%.
To pass ILO3 your aggregate mark on the components of Project Presentation and the Project Final Report assessing ILO3 weighted according to their contribution to the final mark, must be greater than or equal to 50%.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
