What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This introductory unit prepares educators from a variety of disciplines to meet the maturational needs of diverse learners by providing a foundational base of knowledge regarding physical and cognitive development from conception through adulthood, with an emphasis on early childhood and childhood. Teaching all children the benefits of lifelong physical activity participation through the use of developmentally appropriate assessment and programming strategies is the primary focus of this unit.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1
Explain your understanding of motor development theory and its application to instructional settings.
2
Exhibit an understanding of phase development through movement and the factors that influence changes in developing humans.
3
Express how movement can facilitate cognitive learning experiences and intellectual development.
4
Foster a greater depth of knowledge of the education field by engaging with the peer-reviewed literature.
Alterations as a result of student feedback
This unit has been condensed to fit the new 12-week semester at UTAS. Now students will complete the "warm-up" learning module during the two-week period before the semester begins. This learning module is not compulsory, and only allows students to preview how the unique design of this online unit well be presented during the semester.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online or includes online activities, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline or MyLO, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

Welcome to this online unit. Engagement is structured around six, two-week learning modules across the 12-week semester, with each module requiring the completion of an entry quiz and an exit quiz. Because we operate entirely online, our asynchronous discussion boards serve as our primary classroom. You are expected to log into MyLO weekly and become an active fixture in our tutor-led discussion threads. While a baseline of contributions (posts) per module is required to satisfy minimum attendance monitoring, we want you to treat these boards as a living conversation. You are encouraged to post, question, and reply as much as possible. Tutors will regularly monitor these threads to track student progress, and vibrant, continuous engagement is the best marker of success in this unit.

Assessment details
Assessment Task 1: Entry Quiz
Task Description:
To kick off each of our six learning modules, you will dive into selected readings designed to broaden your perspective on the topic.

Once you have completed the readings, your task is to complete an Entry Quiz to test your reading comprehension. These are short quizzes usually between 5 and 9 multiple-choice questions.

How It Works (Grading vs. Access to the Learning Module):

You must score at least 60% on the Entry Quiz to unlock the lecture videos and the rest of the learning module content.

If you don't hit 60% on your first try, you can retake the quiz as many times as you need to clear the threshold and release the content.

Only the score from your very first attempt will count toward your final grade for this assessment task.

These quizzes are timed, meaning you must complete your attempt in one sitting.

Before opening the Quiz link, students should be fully prepared with their notes, and logged into a stable internet connection.

There are six Entry Quiz requirements throughout the semester.

Check MyLO or the Unit Schedule for the specific opening and closing dates for each of the six Entry Quizzes.

Professional Alignment: Completion of this Assessment Task directly relates to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.1 and 1.2.
Task Length:
Each (6) Entry Quiz is between 5 and 9 multiple choice questions equating to approximately 800 words total.

Assessment Task 2: Exit Quiz
Task Description:
At the end of each learning module, you will complete a 10-question multiple-choice Exit Quiz to assess your understanding of the core content.

Unlike the Entry Quizzes, which allow for multiple retakes to unlock content you only get ONE attempt at each Exit Quiz.

These quizzes are timed, meaning you must complete your attempt in one sitting.

Be fully prepared, log into a stable internet connection, and have your notes ready before you press Start.

Once you start the Quiz, your first score is final. So, ensure you have thoroughly reviewed the module material before beginning the Quiz.

These quizzes focus on foundational, essential knowledge. Every question is designed to test the core concepts that are considered absolutely vital to secure a PASS in this unit. Treat these as a benchmark for your basic understanding before moving forward.

Each of the six modules has a strict closing date for its Exit Quiz. You can find the complete list of deadlines in the Unit Schedule and in MyLO.

Professional Alignment: Completion of this Assessment Task directly relates to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.1, 1.2, 1.5, 2.1.
Task Length:
There are six Exit Quizzes in total for this unit, one per learning module. Approximately 2000 words overall.

Assessment Task 3: Discussion Board Engagement
Task Description:
Within each learning module your tutors will post targeted discussion tasks challenging you to review the module content through practical exercises that draw on your past experiences and newly developed knowledge. Treat these boards as a living, continuous conversation with your classmates and tutor.

Your engagement on the discussion boards is worth 45% of your total mark and will be formally evaluated by your tutor using a dedicated 15-point rubric for each learning module.

Discussion boards are turned off and locked immediately after each learning module is completed. Once a module closes, you can no longer add new posts or replies to that topic, so you must manage your time carefully to maximize your engagement score before the window shuts.

Completion of this Assessment Task relates to Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.5, 2.1
Task Length:
For each module, your original contributions must total a minimum of 150 words and must explicitly reference relevant academic literature, where appropriate. While 150 words is the absolute minimum baseline to avoid losing points, there is no maximum limit. We want you to treat these boards as an open dialogue. You are explicitly encouraged to post, question, debate, and reply as much as possible across the full two-week period, of each learning module. More specific guidelines for grading will be described in the rubric and presented to the class in week 1.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Academic progress review
The results for this unit may be included in a review of your academic progress. For information about progress reviews and what they mean for all students, see Academic Progress Review in the Student Portal.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.
Academic integrity
Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. To find out the referencing style for this unit, see the assessment information in the MyLO site, or contact your teaching staff. For more detail about Academic Integrity, see
Important Guidelines & Support.
Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.

Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
