Unit Outline

This unit introduces you to the speech pathology role supporting every individual's right to optimal communication and swallowing, and the foundational speech pathology theoretical, clinical reasoning and practice frameworks that will be applied and integrated throughout the Master of Speech Pathology course. The unit develops your contemporary understanding of different types and models of disability, including the principles and obligations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The unit has a focus on communication access, participation and inclusion, including the ethical involvement of people with communication and swallowing needs in research. You will have the opportunity to reflect on and respond to your own personal biases, assumptions and preconceptions of people and populations with communication and swallowing needs.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Identify the scope of speech pathology practice and the speech pathology role, including the provision of speech pathology services, prevention and promotion strategies, and advocacy for people’s rights.
2	Analyse different types and models of disabilities and the diversity of impact on individuals, families and communities.
3	Explain possible barriers and enablers to the full and effective participation and inclusion of people with communication and swallowing needs.
4	Evaluate processes for ethically involving people with communication and swallowing needs throughout research planning, implementation, and dissemination.
5	Reflect on own perspectives, assumptions and preconceptions of disability and communication and swallowing needs.

Assessment Task 1: Speech Pathology Role

Task Description:

In this assignment you will develop an infographic or social media campaign defining and explaining the role and scope of the speech pathology profession to the public. The explanation should be comprehensive, yet easy to understand.

Task Length:

500 words for infographic or social media campaign and 500 words for reflection on the product.

Assessment Task 2: Written Assignment

Task Description:

In this written assignment you will explore different types and models of disability and factors impacting participation and inclusion in response to an allocated stimulus (e.g. media artefact, blog post, pod cast episode, book). You will examine the diversity of impact of disability and communication and swallowing needs on people, families and communities, considering different historical, social and cultural perspectives. You will critically reflect on your own personal biases, assumptions and preconceptions of disability and communication and swallowing needs and how your learning through this assessment will influence your future practice. You will also reflect on your planning, critical thinking and writing process.

Assessment Task 3: Case Study

Task Description:

In this case study assessment, you will be presented with information about a contemporary and authentic situation involving a person with communication and/or swallowing needs, their family, and community. You will analyse the situation to identify barriers and enablers to participation and inclusion, applying professional frameworks and models of disability. You will then simulate a supervision session with your practice educator and video record yourself presenting a 15 minute case analysis. You are to demonstrate your responsiveness to diversity and advocacy, and adherence to research frameworks.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
