Unit Outline

CSA723 is a self-directed, fully on-line unit, that explores a variety of disease states and their management, using a series of patient cases linked to assignment-based questions, to enable you to enhance your knowledge in the area of clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care. This unit covers the medication management and clinical pharmacy issues in respiratory and renal diseases.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Devise effective search strategies in renal and respiratory medicine.
2	Critically evaluate medication therapy in respiratory and renal diseases by applying current evidence, clinical guidelines, and patient-specific considerations.
3	Justify pharmacotherapeutic care plans for complex respiratory and renal cases.
4	Communicate knowledge, skills and ideas to professional audiences.

Assessment Task 1: Practice-Based Concept Summary

Task Description:

Assignment 1 will present you with a practice-based current concept with an associated reading. You will then give your recommendations of the topic.
Include a short practice implications box (150 words max) — what would you recommend for your workplace as a result of this concept?

Assessment Task 2: Clinical Management Plan

Assessment Task 3: Quality Improvement Project Presentation

Task Description:

Assignment 3 involves preparing and delivering an engaging and interactive scientific presentation to clinical and non-clinical audiences on a given clinical topic using PowerPoint slides. You will select one of several clinical topics related to pharmacy practice of respiratory and/or renal diseases. You will present a quality improvement project drawn from your practice. You must support your presentation with contemporary literary evidence. To do this activity well, you will need a lot of preparation, research, facts and figures, data collection, data synthesis and collaboration with colleagues for their opinions. You will present this, and your performance will be assessed on your ability to answer questions about your quality improvement project.
This is a hurdle task.

Up to 10 minutes presentation followed by 10 minutes examiner/peer question and answers.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
