Unit Outline

This unit builds upon CNA740 Foundations of Mental Health Nursing Theory 1. The unit explores key issues in mental health nursing including recovery-oriented practice, mental health promotion, and the integration of lived-experience perspectives. You will critically examine recovery-oriented mental health nursing practice in relation to a wide range of acute and community settings and sub-specialty practice areas. You will also consider key principles underpinning clinical practice development and how they support the development of your own clinical practice development plan.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Critically appraise contemporary mental health research to inform appropriate recovery-oriented care strategies for a range of healthcare contexts and life stages.
2	Critique a range of key mental health practice issues as they relate to the acute care and community contexts.
3	Evaluate strategies used as primary prevention interventions related to mental health.
4	Critically evaluate contemporary issues and practices relating to the role of the mental health nurse in mental health sub-specialist areas.

Assessment Task 1: Presentation

Task Description:

You will be required to prepare and record an oral presentation discussing a mental health practice issue or recovery strategy within your practice setting, integrating critical appraisal of the literature on this issue or strategy.

7 minute video and 1000 word transcript

This assessment requires you to engage with fellow students in discussion forums within MyLO. The forums will enable discussions of both student-nominated topics and specific unit content.

Assessment Task 3: Practice Development Planning

Task Description:

This assessment task requires you to develop a plan that could be used to enable practice development in relation to a relevant setting, service or issue. Your plan will demonstrate an evidence-informed approach to enhancing individual and/or service capacity to provide recovery-oriented mental healthcare. The plan will include consideration of the planning process and issues that may arise should the plan be implemented in future. The task requires you to summarise your plan, document your literature review process and participate in an interactive oral assessment to discuss both of those in relation to the marking criteria.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
