What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This unit, along with Unit 4B, is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical placements. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council (AMC) medical graduate outcomes. Additionally, during this Unit and continuing in Units 4B, 5A and 5B, students will undertake an independent capstone research/professional practice project. This unit is integrated with the programme in the following year of the course (Unit 5A and 5B). Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues, will be delivered by a mixture of learning activities and will require a self-directed learning approach. The BMedSc/MD curriculum uses the AMC domains as an organising principle under which ILOs have been developed and outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner); Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader); Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate); and Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar). On successful completion of Unit 4A students receive an AO (Assessment Ongoing) result. The final result for this unit is granted on completion of Unit 4B. Note: Students are required to enrol concurrently in Unit 4A and Unit 4B. In order for students to undertake Professional Experience Placements (PEPs), there are mandatory requirements to be completed before students can enter a PEP venue. These are outlined in the Safety in Practice Agreement (https://www.utas.edu.au/health/professional-experience-placement/safety-in-practice-requirements). The Safety in Practice Disclosures section requires the student to establish, with the University, their capacity to perform the mandatory functional requirements of the course in which they are enrolled. The Safety in Practice Agreement also requires the student to comply with the UTAS Behaviour Policy, agree to undertake a police (criminal record) check, working with vulnerable persons registration and provide evidence of their immunisation/vaccination status. Students enrolled in the Tasmanian School of Medicine are required to comply with these requirements prior to the allocation of, and participation in, professional experience placements (which includes community engagement activities) and clinical rotations in health care settings. Students who do not comply will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not meet the requirements of the unit. Further information is available at the Health PEP website: http://www.utas.edu.au/health/professional-experience-placement Students who are unsure of the procedural guidelines should seek guidance from the School of Medicine.

Alterations as a result of student feedback
CAM741/742 are new units for 2026, equivalent to CAM418/419 units of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M3N) degree.
In 2025 feedback was collated from students and staff regarding their experience with the new robust ePortfolio software called risr/advance. As a result of this feedback adjustments have been made to the goal setting function and to a number of the rubrics within the portfolio platform.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online or includes online activities, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline or MyLO, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

As an integrated clinical placement unit, students are expected to participate in all scheduled teaching and learning activities, as well as professional experience placement (PEP). Please see the Leave Guidelines on MyLO for further details.

How your final result is determined
CAM741 and CAM742 are linked units and your final result will be determined upon completion of CAM742. An Assessment Ongoing (AO) grade will be awarded for CAM741 pending completion of CAM742.
To be awarded a final passing grade you must have:
- Demonstrated achievement of all ILOs AND
- Passed all assessment tasks
Academic progress review
The results for this unit may be included in a review of your academic progress. For information about progress reviews and what they mean for all students, see Academic Progress Review in the Student Portal.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.
Academic integrity
Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. To find out the referencing style for this unit, see the assessment information in the MyLO site, or contact your teaching staff. For more detail about Academic Integrity, see
Important Guidelines & Support.
Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.

Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
