Unit Outline

This unit is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical placements. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council, AMC, medical student outcomes. This unit is integrated with the programme in the following year of the course. Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues and will be delivered by a mixture of learning opportunities and will require self-directed learning approaches. The MBBS curriculum uses the AMC 4 domains as an organising principle under which the outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner), Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader), Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate), and Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar). On completion of CAM418 students receive an AO (Assessment Ongoing) result. A final result is granted on completion of CAM419. Note: Students are required to enrol concurrently in CAM418 and CAM419. In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the College of Health and Medicine and Tasmanian School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

Alterations as a result of student feedback

In 2025 feedback was collated from students and staff regarding their experience with the new robust ePortfolio software called risr/advance. As a result of this feedback adjustments have been made to the goal setting function and to a number of the rubrics within the portfolio platform.

Assessment Task 1: OSCE

Task Description:

12 Stations blueprinted against CBL curriculum to cover a range of competencies and disciplines. This is an on campus, invigilated examination.

The pass mark for each station is determined by the Borderline Regression Method

Assessment Task 2: Professional Portfolio

Task Description:

The portfolio demonstrates the programmatic assessment of students’ learning across the clinical years. The portfolio contains both individual summative and “Portfolio Assessment requirements” aspects of assessment. “Portfolio Assessment requirements” assessment activities must be attempted and assessed as satisfactory in order to pass the overall Portfolio component of assessment for the year. All components of the portfolio as listed below are common to all Clinical Schools.

The Portfolio will include clinical placement requirements, professional training and readiness activities, participation in teaching activities.

Assessment Task 3: Exam

Task Description:

Written paper, split into two sections and administered over two sittings, consisting of best answer out of five (MCQ) type of questions.

The MCQ is delivered as an on campus invigilated examination. Students are expected to use their own device (laptop computer) to complete the examination.

The pass mark will be determined by an appropriate standard setting methodology.

How your final result is determined

CAM418 and CAM419 are linked units and your final result will be determined upon completion of CAM419. An Assessment Ongoing (AO) grade will be awarded for CAM418 pending completion of CAM419.

To be awarded a final passing grade you must have:

- Demonstrated achievement of all ILOs AND

- Passed all assessment tasks

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
