What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This unit develops advanced knowledge and applied skills for airway, oxygenation and ventilation interventions to support patients with acute or complex medical or trauma emergencies and in the critical care and retrieval setting. Clinical skills teaching will scaffold from theory to practice using simulation or cadaver-based education models in an optional three-day practical intensive.  You will further develop your clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, incorporating the principles of advanced pharmacology, contemporary evidence-based advanced clinical care, and ethical considerations for providing systematic, safe and effective critical care.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Communicate the role of critical care and retrieval in the wider health system to a diverse audience.

Justify advanced assessment, clinical decision making and management of patients presenting with a range of acute or complex emergency presentations.

Apply principles of oxygenation and ventilation to develop ventilatory strategies across a range of complex medical and trauma conditions in critically ill patients.

Critically reflect on decision making required to manage high acuity end emergent presentations.

Assessment Task 1: Critical Reflection of Clinical practice
Task Description:
You are required to select a case from your own experiences and clinical practice that you identify as a clinically challenging case. Specifically, critically reflect on a clinical experience where you were involved in the assessment and management of a patient with severe respiratory complications in your clinical setting (e.g., ARDS, acute respiratory failure, or complex ventilator management). Using a structured reflective model (e.g., Gibbs, Driscoll), analyse your clinical decision-making, interprofessional collaboration, and application of evidence-based practice. Discuss how this experience has informed your ongoing professional development and future clinical practice.

Assessment Task 2: e- Portfolio
Task Description:
You will submit an e-Portfolio a clinical case that demonstrates your clinical application of the required knowledge and understanding to a patient in respiratory failure.
Your e-Portfolio should consist of an application of critical thinking to illustrate a thorough clinical assessment of a patient’s condition and respiratory status and allow you to address the following elements:-
- identify the underlying pathophysiology
- determine the most appropriate mode of optimising oxygenation and ventilation
- describe the PoC test, investigations or interventions that would support clinical decisions
- propose a management strategy.
- Consider any retrieval or transport requirements for your patient.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
