What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 
This unit is available in a number of undergraduate degrees offered across the University.
Students undertake a work-based project with a public, private, or for-purpose organisation. Business Placements connect students’ university knowledge with real-world, industry-established projects and tasks. This authentic and practical learning experience enhances employability and provides students with opportunities to network within industry and explore career pathways while studying.
The unit is highly accessible and designed to fit alongside students’ existing study commitments. It requires just one day per week over the course of the semester, making it manageable with other academic and personal responsibilities.
Placements are matched to each student’s course, interests, and career aspirations. A designated placement mentor is assigned to support student learning throughout the experience. This is an advanced-level unit that integrates work and learning, comprising 80 hours of applied learning (7.5 hours per placement day) and approximately 40 hours of coursework and teaching.

Assessment Task 1: InPlace Compliance Documentation

Assessment Task 3: Placement Plan
Task Description:
This assessment task supports students to plan strategically when preparing for their placement.

Students are provided a placement plan template. The placement plan encourages students to understand organisational goals from the placement and develop key success criteria. Students then map key placement priorities and milestones toward developing of their solutions.

Students are encouraged to share and coordinate their placement plan with host mentors and include personal growth goals.

Assessment Task 5: Recorded Presentation
Task Description:
This assessment comprises of a 3-5-minute video presentation reflecting on the first part of the placement experience, considering;

1) An overview of the placement organisation,
2) The project, tasks and steps undertaken by you.
3) Actual or anticipated outputs of the work-based project ahead.

Assessment Task 6: InPlace Timesheets
Task Description:
All hours and entries inputted correctly and in full.

Students will have access to supports and an InPlace Timesheets demonstration in week 1.

Students must submit one (1) test InPlace Timesheet prior to commencing their placement.
Task Length:
An accurate and full account of placement application (hours) is a requirement to complete the placement unit.

Assessment Task 7: Showcase Presentation
Task Description:
Students to present to a live audience showcasing the key steps, learnings and outcomes from the placement experience.

Distance students will present live via video conference software.

2–3 minute in-person presentation with accompanying slides (or equivalent content).

Assessment Task 8: Reflections
Task Description:
Complete three (3) concurrent reflections throughout a placement experience.

Reflections are ongoing and align with stages of placement and workshop content throughout the semester. Reflections may be prescriptive or open ended.

Three (3) reflections 300-500 words each.

Assessment Task 9: Placement Application and Engagement
Task Description:
Students apply knowledge, skills and capabilities from University studies to a work-based project or agreed placement tasks as agreed by the placement mentor, student and Business Placement Coordinator.

As students progress through their placement, industry mentors will check in at two formal intervals to record engagement and progress with context to a work-based project.

11 days of placement application (80 hours equivalent).

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
