Unit Outline

This unit puts you in control of your learning by allowing you to shape your study around your interests, career goals, or personal passions. With the guidance of a mentor or supervisor, you will choose a focus—this could be a self-directed project, work or volunteer experience, a series of short courses, or another learning activity that excites you.

Throughout the unit, you will research and communicate your insights, exploring the skills, knowledge, innovations, or solutions that emerge from your chosen area of study. Finally, you will reflect on how your experience contributes to your personal and professional growth, helping you plan your next steps in study, career, or life.

This unit is ideal for students who want flexibility, practical experience, or the chance to pursue a passion project.

Assessment Task 1: Negotiated Study Plan

Task Description:

For this task, you will prepare a proposal (or summary) for your negotiated study, including learning goals, preparatory requirements, and supervision/support arrangements. You will complete this proposal on the template provided and submit it via MyLO for approval and marking.

You are also required to negotiate a meeting schedule and milestones with your supervisor/mentor prior to the end of week 2.

Assessment Task 2: Progress Report and Analysis

Task Description:

You are required to provide a report on your progress to-date, exploring milestone achievements, any proposed refinements, and the knowledge, skills, attributes and behaviours that you are developing as part of your negotiated study.

This progress report will be completed on the template provided and submitted to MyLO for marking.

Assessment Task 3: Negotiated Study Final Report

Task Description:

You will prepare a final report, providing reflections on, and evidence of, the outcomes achieved, including knowledge, skills, attributes, behaviours, innovations, solutions, materials, and/or artefacts that have arisen from your chosen area of study. You will be provided with a template for your report.

You will submit your report, together with a continuing personal, academic and/or professional development plan, at the end of semester.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
