Unit Outline

Object Design is a pathway unit offered by the School of Creative Arts and Media (CAM) at the University of Tasmania. It introduces you to design concepts across a wide range of disciplines and materials. This is a year-long theme-based unit where, with the support of your teachers, you will engage in design activities around iterative practice to develop a creative response to a design brief. Assessment tasks include a design proposal, the submission of a major design proposition or object supported by a project journal, as well as a reflective statement. Completed student works will be presented in a group exhibition. Assessment will be undertaken by University of Tasmania staff in collaboration with teacher associates. UTAS staff scaffold learning and teaching activities by supporting students and teacher associates through schools/ college visits and online resources.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Task Description:

A 500-word reflection which describes:
• your understanding of the design field,
• your development of skills in design thinking and making processes,
• your experience during the development and resolution of your final object design.

Assessment Task 2: Task 1: Design Proposal

Task Description:

You will develop a design proposal that responds to the theme. The design proposal is written in a template and does not exceed 500 words.
You are encouraged to approach the theme from a variety of perspectives. You will document your design process through journaling, writing and other creative approaches such as material investigations.
Your journal and project documentation should identify references and/or influences that inform the direction of a theme-based project and indicate how the chosen design medium is suitable for investigating the theme.

Your design proposal is an indication of the directions you set out to take. It is normal in design, however, for projects to evolve in ways that are not anticipated. Your design proposal should not prevent you from re-evaluating your initial intentions and shifting direction if justified.

Assessment Task 3: Task 2: Final Design Project for Exhibition

Task Description:

Up to 200 -word Design Statement, Research Journal and Final Design Object:
A. The design statement (up to 200 words) describes your response to the design brief and the processes you have undertaken and will be displayed with your designed object.

B. The research journal documents your design process. In order to give it context, it must include visual examples and a short analysis of professional designers whose work have influenced the direction of your project. The journal also captures your design intent in a chronological order through sketches, material samples–where necessary, photographs of work in progress, and short reflections.

C. Design Object or proposition for exhibition

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
