Unit Outline

This unit is the first of two University Connections Program music project units for year 11/12 students aimed at providing an intensive course of study and experience in a Music Theatre production or large musical ensemble. Designed to explore the processes and artistic elements embedded within music and music theatre performance, this unit takes you from preparation and skill development to weekly and then intensive rehearsals, all leading to a final public performance. You will develop skills in collaboration, the ability to adapt and follow direction, as well as the acquisition of appropriate musical, theatre and technical artistic skills within a variety of contexts.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Apply foundational skills in collaboration, communication and problem solving
2	Prepare for a theatrical or musical production using foundational preparation skills including practice regimes, scheduling, rehearsal attendance and logistics
3	Execute instrumental, theatrical, vocal and/or dance technique in a public performance
4	Demonstrate foundational performance practice and stylistic expression in performance
5	Communicate reflections on your achievements in written and/or oral modes to develop your creative practice

Assessment details

Assessment Task 1: Task 3: Reflective journal or piece of writing

Task Description:

You will produce a reflective piece of writing which reflects on your rehearsal processes, learnings and progress. Your work should analyse, document and reflect honestly upon your personal experiences and demonstrate insight into your work and learnings throughout the duration of this project. Reflective work should focus on the development of foundational skills, realisation of role(s), work within an ensemble, and engagement with direction and design concepts.

Task Description:

You will need to complete at least one public performances of your prepared work/repertoire. This will be assessed by visiting UTAS UCP staff working alongside your teachers and directors/conductors.

Assessment Task 3: Task 1: Rehearsal Process – work in progress

Task Description:

You will develop and demonstrate ongoing rehearsal etiquette, follow direction and implement feedback through weekly rehearsals led by your teachers and creative team.

Your teachers and creative teams will provide ongoing assessment of your progress, as well as provide feedback and direction to develop your assigned role. You will need to attend all rehearsals, follow direction, complete given tasks as agreed, and be an active and cooperative member of your team/ensemble.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
