What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
Children and Young People focuses on the unique health and developmental needs of infants, children, and young people. You will develop the knowledge and skills to incorporate developmentally appropriate and strengths-based approaches to communicating and working in partnership with children, young people and their families. You will critically examine the role played by social and environmental factors in child development, injury and illness. You will extend your knowledge of pathophysiology, critical thinking, clinical reasoning and evidence-informed practice in the context of child, youth and family focused nursing care. A key focus will be the primary assessment of acutely unwell infants, children and young people.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Apply critical thinking to the assessment and nursing care of infants, children, young people and their families.

Critically examine how social and environmental factors influence child development, illness or injury.

Apply developmentally appropriate anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology knowledge to the nursing care of infants, children and young people.

Assessment Task 1: Online Quizzes
Task Description:
These quizzes are designed to assist you prepare for class engagement and the Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA). Questions will be drawn from the guided online learning material (including recommended readings).

Quiz 1- Child Development and nursing considerations

Quiz 2- Care of the infant, child or young person with an acute illness.

Assessment Task 2: Presentation - Supporting child development.
Task Description:
This online presentation requires you to demonstrate your understanding of child development with reference to one of the provided case studies. You will present to a small group of your peers and following your presentation your assessor will ask you two questions.

Assessment Task 3: Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA)
Task Description:
Part A: You will be required under observation to apply the A-E assessment framework and clinical reasoning, to a case scenario of an infant or child presenting with an acute illness.
Part A also includes a medication calculation, you must pass this component to achieve a pass grade or greater for this task. A second attempt at this component is permitted however you cannot receive a grade higher than 50% of the available marks if the second attempt is required.
Part B: You will be required to complete short answer questions following your observed A-E assessment in relation to the child assessed in Part A.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
