What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
The concepts of ethics and research underpin our professional frameworks and have established nursing as one of the most trusted professions in Australia. In this unit you will extend your understanding of core legal and ethical concepts, relevant to practice to further enhance your understanding of professional frameworks and responsibilities. You will explore your own values and your role as a moral change agent in the health care setting. The important field of research ethics will be critically examined as the bridge that spans legal and ethical principles into the closely inter‐related domains of research process, evidence‐based practice and knowledge translation. You will explore how nurses use research to build disciplinary knowledge, with a strong emphasis on key methods, assessing the quality of research data and research findings, leading to the provision of evidence‐informed and person‐centred care.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Assessment Task 1: In person Quizzes
Task Description:
In weeks 2 and 3, quizzes will assess your comprehension of the Module 1 readings, and weekly face-to-face teachings (first three weeks),
Each quiz consists of series of short-answer questions and collectively, they contribute 10% of your overall grade. Each quiz will take place during face-to-face teaching in weeks 2 and 3.
Task Length:
Each quiz should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Assessment Task 2: Discussion Board Interactions
Task Description:
In this task you will investigate the ethical and legal considerations underpinning or arising from a provided scenario. You are required to engage in two discussion board activities in relation to the scenario outlining an area of health care.
Task Length:
A minimum of two postings, 1200 words in total.

Assessment Task 3: Research Report - Searching for Evidence
Task Description:
You will use a clinical topic to demonstrate your ability to search the literature to find evidence to answer questions about a selected topic. Part of this task will be done in class time. This task has individual and group elements.
Task Length:
Submission of individual search report 800-1000 words. Excluding tables and reference list. Oral group summary of group work up to 10 minutes.

Assessment Task 4: Research Report Presentation
Task Description:
This task builds on the outcome of your literature search in Assessment Task 3 and will demonstrate your ability to interpret and analyse research evidence to answer your clinical question. This is an individual assessment task.

Narrated presentation, equivalent to 1000 words +/- 10%

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
