Unit Outline

Nursing Practice 2 will build on from Nursing Practice 1 and includes simulation-based learning and 120 hours of Professional Experience Placement. You will develop knowledge and clinical skill acquisition in assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation to deliver evidence-informed and person-centred care to meet the needs of individuals across a range of health conditions. These include acute and chronic alterations in renal, cardiovascular and respiratory health at all stages of the lifespan as well as people experiencing surgical procedures. Through a case-based learning approach, you will develop skills to recognise and manage the deteriorating patient, including pharmacology. You will be expected to function in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice (2016). There will be a strong focus on the importance of team-based communication and interprofessional learning for the promotion of patient safety.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Demonstrate satisfactory development towards capability against the NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice (2016).
2	Apply the framework of clinical reasoning to deliver evidence-informed and person-centred care to individuals experiencing acute and chronic cardiovascular, respiratory and renal health conditions and those experiencing surgical procedures.
3	Explain the physiological effects of medications on individuals with cardiac, respiratory and renal conditions.
4	Apply the Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure (DR ABCDE) framework and perform the relevant clinical skills in the recognition and management of deteriorating patients.
5	Identify the importance of critical reflection, team-based communication and interprofessional learning for patient safety.
6	Use communication skills to persuade and argue for a course of action regarding nursing interventions.

Assessment Task 1: Online Quizzes

Task Description:

This is a series of 3 quizzes designed to promote your readiness to undertake Professional Experience Placement (PEP). Questions will be drawn from online learning materials (including recommended readings) and the simulation lab workshops.

Assessment Task 2: Deteriorating Patient Analysis

This assessment task requires you to critically analyse and reflect on a deteriorating patient scenario.

Assessment Task 3: PEP Workbook.

Task Description:

During your professional experience placement (PEP), you will need to demonstrate satisfactory performance in practice. The supervising Registered Nurse(s) will assess your performance over the 120 hours and complete the documentation supplied by you as outlined in the PEP Workbook. This is a compulsory assessment task and must be completed satisfactorily to be eligible for a pass in this unit.

Assessment Task 4: Objective Structured Clinical Assessment - Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure’ (DR ABCDE) framework

Task Description:

You will be required under observation to apply the ‘Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure’ (DRS ABCDE) framework to one of four scenarios.

Assessment Task 5: Pre-PEP Hurdle Task

Task Description:

This is a short, on-campus, practice-based assessment in which students are required to demonstrate their capacity to safely and effectively perform identified nursing skills prior to attending PEP.

To progress into PEP, students must pass this task.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

In addition, to be eligible for a pass in this unit you must complete 120 hours of Professional Experience Placement (PEP), complete all PEP requirements and achieve a pass in the final Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) Review.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
