Unit Outline

This unit provides both a theoretical and practical overview of project management as it relates to technology-oriented projects. Specifically, this unit will introduce project management principles, techniques and tools that can be used to guide traditional business-oriented ICT projects, as well as those adaptations that are designed to support development of more creative ICT projects. A set of project outputs that are based on best-practice and industry standards will be developed by students, as a training tool in preparation for undertaking real ICT-oriented projects. Completing this unit will provide you with the opportunity to apply for the PMBOK Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) professional industry certification via completion of a certification exam.

Assessment Task 1: Practice Quizzes

Task Description:

Students will complete weekly quizzes related to the module theory to help them practice for the module quiz.

Practice quizzes are optional and do not have a due date.

Task Length:

Three questions completed without a time limit. Each practice quiz can be completed up to three times.

Assessment Task 2: Module Quizzes

Task Description:

Assessment Task 3: Entrepreneurship Assignment

Task Description:

Students will work in groups to identify a problem or opportunity that is meaningful to them. This could involve Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities or any other area of personal interest. Using the Design Thinking process, students will develop an innovative and practical solution to address their chosen problem or opportunity.

Groups will document their Design Thinking journey in a written report, present their idea through a video pitch, and reflect on team collaboration via a peer evaluation process.

Both individual contributions and effective teamwork will contribute to the overall assessment.

2000 word main report, 3 minutes pitch video, 1000 word appendix

Assessment Task 4: Assessed Tutorials

Task Description:

Students will complete a range of tutorial tasks in weeks 2, 3, 4, 8, and 13, including a communications task, an ethics task, an entrepreneurship task, a PMBOK task, and a
Scrummy Agile project management task. The outcomes of these tasks will be assessed.

In summer school, these tutorial tasks will occur intensively over two full-day tutorials.

Individual contribution and teamwork will form part of the assessment.

Task Length:

Task length will vary depending upon the tutorial task, but each task will be submitted by the end of the second hour of each assessed tutorial.

Assessment Task 5: Analysis of a Real World Project

Task Description:

Students will work in a group or individually to visit a local business of their own choice to learn about an ICT project that the business has completed. The students will develop a project scope to record details of the project and make suggestions for improving the project.

Individual contribution and teamwork will form part of the assessment.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
