What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
In this unit we will focus on the Literature Strand of the Australian Curriculum: English and build skills and knowledge for the teaching of language, literacy and literature in the primary school. Evidence based theory and research in Children’s literature ensures that leaners learn to develop vocabulary knowledge, reading fluency and reading comprehension skills and at the same provides an avenue for students to learn about their own cultural heritage and the cultures of other people. 
During the unit, you will explore the 4 sub strands of the Australian Curriculum (i) literature and context (ii) responding to literature (iii) examining literature and (iv) creating literature.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Critically examine theoretical concepts in Australia Curriculum: English - sub strand Literature

Examining literature, in particular features of literary texts and language devices in literary texts

Critique how texts reflect the context of culture and situation in which they are created

Apply your knowledge of pedagogical approaches to consider responses to the ideas, characters and viewpoints in texts and express preferences and evaluating texts

Assessment Task 1: What is a literary text?
Task Description:
Using Australian Curriculum: English Literature strand and other readings identify a quality literary text for an upper primary classroom. Write a justification for why this text fulfills the criteria of a quality reading text for the primary classroom.

Assessment Task 2: Appraisal of a literature study unit of work
Task Description:
From the four teacher resource units of work listed in MyLO, select one unit of work:

Part A:
Critique the unit, using to the Australian Curriculum: English Literature strand based on how adeptly the unit of work incorporates the concepts of literary features of the genre.
Use evidence from the unit of work as well as your set readings to support your discussion.
Comment especially on how well the unit addresses the elements of the literature strand of the Australian Curriculum: English - literature and context; engaging with and responding to literature; examining literature; and creating literature.

Part B:
Based on your appraisal, describe one learning experience that would further enhance the existing unit of work.

Assessment Task 3: Critical Investigation and Synthesis
Task Description:
Using the quality literary text identified in AT1 prepare a detailed lesson and resources for teaching this lesson using a critical approach to literacy.
There are three parts to this assignment:

Part A:
What is the dominant message in your text, are some groups silenced or privileged in this text and thus how does your literary text build critical literacy skills. What might be an alternative reading of this text?

Part B:
Create a detailed lesson plan for developing critical literacy skills in the upper primary classroom. Make explicit links to the Australian Curriculum: English literature strand.

Part C:
Map out a brief learning sequence to show how you would work critically with this text in your selected classroom context. Make explicit links to the Australian Curriculum: English literature strand.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
