Unit Outline

The aim of this unit is to instill confidence and understanding of those concepts of power system analysis that are likely to be encountered in the study and practice of electrical power engineering. The approach is to develop the thinking process of the student in reaching a sound understanding of a broad range of topics in the power-system area of electrical engineering. Calculation of unbalanced fault conditions, methods of symmetrical components, the admittance model and network calculations, the impedance model and network calculations, Thévenin's theorem, load flow solutions, the Gauss-Seidel method, the Newton-Raphson method, power flow studies in system design and operation, SKM Power Tools application for load flow analysis, fault calculation using the bus impedance matrix, the equal-area criterion for transient stability analysis, economic operation of power systems, unit commitment, state estimation of power systems, reliability analysis of power systems.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Assessment Task 3: Labs/Reports

Task Description:

Laboratories in the subject will be primarily based on students developing competency in utilising SKM Power Tools - Electrical Engineering Software to model power systems and performing load flow studies utilising these models.
For each lab students will submit a lab report and defend his or her findings.

Task Length:

5 reports and oral defense of 4 reports.

Assessment Task 4: Project

Task Description:

The assignment provides students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills acquired throughout this unit to the design, simulation and analysis of a given power system. The task will involve applying the learnt software packages, analysis techniques and key knowledge regarding the components of a power system. The assignment includes a report and an oral presentation (30% of the assignment examination). In scoping the design of the power system, students will need to engage in discussions with the client via email or face to face communication. In the report students should discuss the social, cultural, environmental etc. contexts affecting their design.

Task Length:

Typically 30-40 page report and 15 min presentation + questions.

Assessment Task 5: Exam

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

To satisfy ILO 1, an average mark of at least 50% is required on assessments relating to ILO 1

To satisfy ILO 2, an average mark of at least 50% is required on assessments relating to ILO 2

To satisfy ILO 3, an average mark of at least 50% is required on assessments relating to ILO 3

To satisfy ILO 4, an average mark of at least 50% is required on assessments relating to ILO 4

To satisfy ILO 4, an average mark of at least 50% is required on assessments relating to ILO 5

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
