Unit Outline

This unit introduces students to the basics of power system analysis, power generation and power transmission systems. Students will gain skills in analysing and modelling power systems, including calculating fault currents, performing stability analysis and solving load flow studies. The unit provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake advanced studies in electrical power engineering.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Describe and represent the key features and components of an electric power system using standard conventions.
2	Calculate and analyse fault currents in simple electrical systems.
3	Design and analyse power systems utilising mathematical models and software packages.
4	Communicate the outcomes of simple power systems studies and designs through written technical reports and oral presentations.

Alterations as a result of student feedback

Additional week of lab time and support is given for completing second hardware lab experiments.

Research review presentation is brought forward by a week to allow more space at end of semester to focus on design project.

Assessment Task 2: Research review assignment

Task Description:

This assignment will see students independently research a current issue in modern or future power systems and present the topic to teaching staff and their student peers. Presentations will be peer-assessed.

Assessment Task 3: Power systems design project

Task Description:

The design project will provide students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills acquired throughout this unit to the design, simulation and analysis of a simple power system. The task will involve applying the learnt software packages, analysis techniques and key knowledge regarding the components of a power system. Students will analyse their power system using standard tools and report on the case study including any operational considerations for their power system. Students will work in groups and will be assessed on their final technical report, final presentation and individual reflection on the learning experience.

Assessment Task 4: Online Quizzes

Task Description:

Five separate online quizzes (1 hour allowed for each) will be conducted throughout semester. Each quiz is worth 2% of final mark and will assess the content and tutorial problems covered in the preceding 2 - 3 weeks. Quizzes will likely take place at the end of weeks 2, 4, 6, 9, and 11, and can be done at a time of the student's choosing prior to a final due date/time. Feedback will be usually be given within a day of the quiz being due, with students facilitated to review and revise their knowledge based on this feedback.

Assessment Task 5: Final exam

Task Description:

Three hour exam run during the final examination period. The exam will assess students’ ability to integrate the knowledge and skills developed throughout the unit to the study of more comprehensive power systems and in greater depth than covered in the in-semester tests.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Attainment of each ILO is determined by calculating a % score for each ILO, using a weighted sum of all relevant assessment tasks for that ILO. Each ILO is calculated from marks on at least two assessment tasks.

To satisfy ILO 1, a weighted average mark of at least 45 / 100 is required on assessment relating to ILO 1 in Quizzes, Labs, Project Report, Research Review Presentaton and the final Exam.

To satisfy ILO 2, a weighted average mark of at least 45 / 100 is required on Quiz 5, assessment relating to ILO 2 in the Project Report and the final Exam.

To satisfy ILO 3, a weighted average mark of at least 45 / 100 is required on assessment relating to ILO 3 in Quizzes, Labs, Project Report, Research Review Presentaton and the final Exam.

To satisfy ILO 4, a weighted average mark of at least 45 / 100 is required on assessment relating to ILO 4 in Labs, Project Report and the Research Review Presentaton.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
