Unit Outline

This unit provides an introduction to working with the Arts in educational contexts. In this unit you will develop an understanding of the distinctive value of Arts education, particularly the opportunities that it provides to deliver integrated and creative early childhood and primary learning experiences. By the end of this unit, you will be better able to articulate the value of the Arts in education; engage with the essential elements and processes of each of the five art forms (dance, drama, media arts, music and visual art); apply the Arts organising strands of making and responding across the art form areas; and understand the critical role of the teacher in initiating quality arts education in and across a school curriculum.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	explain and analyse the key values underlying the inclusion of the Arts in school education
2	identify the elements of each of the five art forms (dance, drama, media arts, music and visual art) through experiential practice.
3	synthesise key literature and apply the Australian curriculum in the arts organising strands of making and responding to plan for integrated cross-curriculum arts learning.
4	appraise the critical role of the teacher in initiating quality arts education in and across the curriculum.

Assessment Task 1: Arts Education Blog (ePortfolio)

Task Description:

You are required to submit a Blog in Pebblepad as a self-curated space that documents your active experience of the arts, documents your new learnings about the arts, reflects on the implications of your learning, and builds a professional resource for future reference. Assessment Task 2: Lesson Sequence

Task Description:

Using the available PebblePad template, you are required to write a 2000 word plan for a six-lesson unit that integrates learning in at least two arts areas (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts) and one non-arts area (such as English, Maths, History, Science etc).

The unit plan should provide an overview of the six lessons, plus detailed lesson plans for two of the six individual lessons. Your unit plan is for a Primary Class of your choice.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
