Unit Outline

This introductory unit prepares educators from a variety of disciplines to meet the maturational needs of diverse learners by providing a foundational base of knowledge regarding physical and cognitive development from conception through adulthood, with an emphasis on early childhood and childhood. Teaching all children the benefits of lifelong physical activity participation through the use of developmentally appropriate assessment and programming strategies is the primary focus of this unit.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Explain your understanding of motor development theory and its application to instructional settings.
2	Exhibit an understanding of phase development through movement and the factors that influence changes in developing humans.
3	Express how movement can facilitate cognitive learning experiences and intellectual development.
4	Foster a greater depth of knowledge of the education field by engaging with the peer-reviewed literature.

Assessment details

Assessment Task 1: Entry Quiz

Task Description:

To initiate your engagement into the learning module content for each of the six modules there are selected readings to help broaden your perspective. Once you have comprehended the content of these readings you are tasked with taking a short quiz of between 5-9 multiple choice questions.
The result for only the first attempt will be counted towards this assessment task.
Students need to score at least 60% in the quiz (you can take it as many times as you like after the first attempt) in order to release the lecture content videos, and access to engage with the rest of the learning module. A list of Entry Quiz availability dates for each of the six learning modules can be found in the Unit Schedule and in MyLO.

Completion of this Assessment Task relates to Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.1, 1.2

Task Length:

One, short quiz (between 5 and 9 multiple choice questions) to begin each of the six learning modules (equating to approximately 800 words).

Assessment Task 2: Exit Quiz

Task Description:

To assess your knowledge of the learning module content, each student will be tasked with completing a ten-question, Exit Quiz within each learning module. A list of the six Exit Quiz closing dates can be located in the Unit Schedule and within MyLO. This assessment piece focuses on the generic attribute of knowledge and as such all quiz items assess the student’s level of declarative knowledge that is considered essential for a PASS in this unit.

Task Length:

There are six Exit Quizzes in total for this unit, one per learning module. Approximately 2000 words overall.

Assessment Task 3: Discussion Board Engagement

Task Description:

To help students fortify their knowledge of the learning module lecture content, the tutors will create discussion tasks that will challenge the students to apply their newly developed knowledge. New discussion threads will be created to review each learning module objectives through practical exercises drawing on past and newly developed student knowledge and experiences.
Student engagement in this learning module task will be marked by the tutors after the 3rd and 6th learning modules. These tasks are designed to help students grapple with lecture content to prepare them for the Exit Quiz (AT3) within each of the six learning modules.
Tutors will base their grade to this task on a rubric that measures the quantity and quality of each post against the assessment criteria. Further details and a rubric will be made available in MyLO during week 1.

Task Length:

This class engagement task is worth 45% of the total mark for the Unit. Each learning module’s contribution should refer to relevant literature and be comprised of a minimum of 150 words: totaling approximately 1000 words overall. More specific guidelines for posting will be described in the rubric and presented to the class in week 1.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
