Unit Outline

What is cultural responsiveness and why is it increasingly valued in workplaces? What does it mean to commit to cultural safety as a health practitioner? In this online unit, you will develop your understanding of culture and the need for cultural responsiveness and cultural safety. You will begin to see culture in broad terms, and to explore the cultural and social influences that shape your own beliefs, values and behaviour and your own experiences of oppression and privilege. You will reflect on how all this affects how you interact with others, and practice responding in open minded, curious ways when your values and expectations are challenged. You will draw on unit readings and reliable literature to plan your lifelong journey of living and working effectively in a world where inequitable life experiences and outcomes based on factors including race, class, ethnicity, language, gender, ability and sexuality persist. While the unit focuses on cultural responsiveness in an Australian context, international exemplars and research are included.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Explain how your own and other people’s cultures shape values and behaviour; and acknowledge and address your own biases and assumptions.
2	Plan for ongoing application of cultural responsiveness and/or cultural safety by applying key principles to achieve equity, such as self-reflection and collaborative decision-making.
3	Identify and draw on reliable information to inform reflection on, and application of, cultural responsiveness.

Task Description:

Assessment Task 2. Reflection: Connecting your culture, values and behaviour

Reflect on how these cultural expectations may impact your interactions with others. Full details will be provided in the Guide for Assessment Task 2 on MyLO. This assessment will provide a foundation for future assessment tasks.

Task Description:

Assessment Task 3. Reflections (x2)
Draw on unit content to create two reflections that demonstrate your learning in CZZ104 over the semester. One reflection will address a compulsory reflection topic. For the other reflection, you can choose from any of the provided reflection activities in MyLO. Full details will be provided in the Guide for Assessment Task 3 on MyLO.

Assessment Task 4: Assignment

Task Description:

Assessment Task 4. Plan for action
This assignment is in two parts.
• Firstly, choose and analyse one of the Assessment Task 4 vignettes. Draw on unit concepts and readings to prepare a culturally responsive or culturally safe interaction between yourself and the character/s from the vignette. This may be submitted as a video OR as text of the video script.
• Secondly, use unit concepts and/or readings to evaluate your interaction video or transcript. This can be submitted as a video OR as a text document.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
