Unit Outline

This unit consolidates knowledge and skills related to professional practice issues and communication in physiotherapy. The unit retains the focus on client assessment, planning and interventions using a clinical reasoning approach. Physiotherapy approaches are studied in relation to prevention, management and maximisation of client potential and the application of a client-centred and evidence-based approach to direct client interventions. You will develop physiotherapy clinical skills and knowledge for the evaluation and management of complex and chronic conditions across the lifespan.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1	Demonstrate professional conduct and consistent adherence to legal, professional, ethical standards, codes and guidelines in the delivery of person-centred physiotherapy practice for people across the lifespan and those with complex conditions.
2	Critically appraise prior knowledge of chronic and complex conditions from core streams of physiotherapy (musculoskeletal, neurosciences and cardiorespiratory) and apply theories of chronicity and complexity in person centred care.
3	Adapt physiotherapy assessment and intervention strategies to provide person centred care that is appropriate for patients’ stage of life.
4	Collaborate interprofessionally and communicate clinical information to patients/clients, carers, other healthcare practitioners and other stakeholders.

Assessment Task 1: Written assignment

Task Description:

Task Description The assessment task requires you to use a systematic clinical reasoning approach to compare and contrast two clinical conditions using specific case studies within a Tasmanian context to differentiate the aetiology, pathoanatomy, and pathophysiology between the clinical conditions. The clinical reasoning approach must include:
1. identification of the key features of each clinical condition and how these features will present clinically in the case studies using the WHO ICF Framework
2. differentiate the clinical presentations of the two case studies based on the underlying pathophysiology, including stage of the condition (acute vs chronic etc), and severity 3. identify and differentiate any differential diagnoses that are associated with the clinical conditions in each case study and the key differentiating features,
4. identify and differentiate best evidence management of the clinical conditions in each cases study
identify potential adverse effects of the management of the conditions including allied health interventions and medical management including medications and/or surgical management
5. differentiate the prognostic nature of the various clinical presentations within and between the case studies in line with the diagnosis, current conservative and/or surgical management
6. discuss the required multidisciplinary care, interdisciplinary referrals to facilitate the physiotherapy rehabilitation within and between the case studies

Assessment Task 2: Three quizzes

Task Description:

Three quizzes. These online invigilated quizzes assess knowledge related to anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and physiotherapy interventions for clients for people across the lifespan and those with complex conditions.

Assessment Task 3: Oral presentation (Online)

Task Description:

Oral presentation (Online) – Pathophysiology, pharmacological and physiotherapy management, and prognostic features of conditions that affect people across the lifespan.

In this assessment, you are required to take an evidence-based approach to present a current update on the aetiology, epidemiology, pathoanatomy, pathophysiology, clinical and radiological features (as applicable) of a given condition . The associated side effects and complications, as well as the short-term and long-term prognostic features of the impairments of the given condition should be discussed. The management, including access to imaging, allied health and medical services should be presented within a Tasmanian context, Your unit coordinator will assign you with a condition for the presentation. You are required to perform this oral presentation to the teaching team and peer group, which includes a 5-min question and answer.

20 minutes presentation time, and 5 minutes QA time (25 min/presentation)

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
