Unit Outline

This unit is designed to link and complement your program of study by introducing students to the work environment. The professional experience placement (PEP) provides students with 80 hours of industry experience within their general field of study. Students will be required to: demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for PEP and employment in the relevant discipline; demonstrate competency in discipline specific workplace tasks, and integrate discipline specific knowledge through practice, reflection and project work. Students will initially complete learning modules that will assist them in preparing for your professional experience placement.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Assessment details

Assessment Task 1: Group Presentation

Task Description:

This assignment requires you to work in a group with your peers in preparation for your Professional Experience Placement. In consultation with your PEP site supervisor, you will develop and deliver a nutrition education session that you can use when on placement, either as a presentation to the local community or as a professional development activity for site staff.
In addition to your group mark, there will be an individually marked component. Further details are available in MyLO.

Assessment Task 2: Log Book

Task Description:

Log Book.
Students are required to document their practicum activities in the spaces provided in the logbook template provided to you. Logbooks needs to be filled in every day students are on placement. Final logbooks must contain all necessary information and assessment for quality of entries and correct logging of activities.

Assessment Task 3: Reflection Diary

Task Description:

Reflection Diary.

Students are required to complete a reflection diary, using a reflective writing framework or model appropriate to their discipline. The diary will detail the student’s experiences and personal reflections of their professional placement leading up to their placement, during placement and following their placement. Assessment Task 4: External Supervisor Competency Assessment

Task Description:

External Supervisor Competency Assessment.
Supervisors will undertake a competency assessment during your practicum time in this unit. The form identifies any areas of strengths and weaknesses and acts as an indicator of the abilities expected of you while out on placement. This assessment will be completed by the main site Supervisor or responsible staff member who is chiefly responsible for you. Instructions on how Supervisors are to complete the Competency Assessments are provided in the Supervisor and Student Guidelines.

This assessment task is a hurdle task and must be passed in order to be eligible for a pass in the unit.

Assessment Task 5: Project Report

Task Description:

Group Project Report.

This assignment requires you to work in a group with your peers on a project which is pertinent to your Professional Experience Placement site. The assessment task involves submission of a final written report.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first.
