Unit Description

In this unit you will be introduced to the regulatory environment in which applied science enterprises operate. In particular, you will explore the regulatory challenges of product safety, biosecurity and environment protection, as well as business practices inherent in product development, manufacture and commercialisation. You will gain familiarity with various bodies (including local, state and federal government) that regulate applied science enterprises, learn how various tools including Australian and international standards support regulatory compliance by business, and apply your knowledge to explore questions of compliance in work-based scenarios.

In addition, this unit builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:

- discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences

- concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others - the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice

- the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.

You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1.

Describe the regulatory and stakeholder framework in which applied science enterprises operate

2.

Apply tools and frameworks to navigate the regulatory challenges faced by applied science enterprises

3.

Analyse potential ethical, environmental and economic risks associated with regulatory non-compliance

4.

Critically reflect on the application of discipline skills on your personal and professional development

Attendance / engagement expectations

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

Assessment Task 1: Annotated Stakeholder Mind Map

Task Description:

Who cares if I get it right?
For Assessment Task 1 you will select and use one of the following scenarios to create an annotated stakeholder mind map (full details for each of the scenarios will be provided in MyLO).
The scenarios
1. There’s a Listeria loose at Cheesable – a food safety regulation scenario
2. Let’s get ready to cider – a food labelling regulation scenario
3. Curly challenges for OysterCatcher – an aquaculture safety regulation scenario
4. A storm and a clean-up – an aquaculture environment regulation scenario
5. It’s cheap but is it worth it? – a chemical manufacturing and controlled waste regulation scenario
To complete this assessment task
1. Read your chosen scenario and take a look at the resources and links provided to start your thinking.
2. Around the central question of “who cares that I get it right”, and clearly identifying your chosen scenario, you will produce a mind map on one A4 page, identifying at least 6 but not more than 12 stakeholders of key relevance for the scenario.
3. You will also provide annotation of the stakeholder mind map on 2 - 4 additional pages (A4, 12pt font, 1 x line spacing and normal margins). Your annotation should be detailed and provide clear comments that demonstrate your knowledge of how each of the stakeholders you have identified may affect and / or be affected by the events that have occurred within the scenario.

Task Length:

1 page mind map as pdf (A4) 2 – 4 pages appended annotation as pdf (A4, 12 pt font, 1 x line spacing and normal margins)

Assessment Task 2: Compliance Tool Application - Oral Presentation

Task Description:

How can i know that I'm getting it right?

For Assessment Task 2 you will use a compliance tool to address the question “how can I know that I am getting it right?” within the context of the development of a new, fictitious product or process by a fictitious company in the fermentation and separation or aquaculture industry. You will play the role of Project Leader for the introduction of the new fictitious product or process, and you have been requested by your CEO to deliver a 12 - 15 minute (8 - 10 slide) PowerPoint briefing to your company’s executive team to convince them that the company is getting it right when it comes to compliance for the new product or process. To assist you in the preparation of your PowerPoint select and use one of the following compliance tools to provide a framework for your briefing.

- Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)
- Aquaculture Farm Biosecurity Plan (DAWR)

Hurdle Task: Tutor approval of your topic, this includes a 1/2 - 1 page introduction of the product or process by a fictitious company in the fermentation and separation or aquaculture industry. Due Week 4

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.

Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
