What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

The effective and efficient operation of business is human resource intensive. Strategies used to attract, motivate, manage and retain the right people are essential skills for all business managers for business success. This unit introduces you to how Human Resource practices including functions such as recruitment, training, performance management and teamwork. You will explore the legal framework incorporating fairness and respect, health and safety, and equity and diversity that underpins human resource practice, using business examples and applied activities. This unit also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to: - a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice - principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios - reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations - ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline, including any self-directed learning.

Assessment Task 1: AT1: Recruitment Process
Task Description:
A Position Description will be provided with the detailed Assignment Information Sheet. Based on this, you will prepare i) a selection criteria and ii) a list of interview questions that would enable an interview panel to select the best candidate for the job

Assessment Task 2: AT2: Simulated Workplace Scenario
Task Description:
For this assessment, you will participate in a Simulated Workplace situation at the first Workshop. Scenarios will be provided where a manager needs to have a ‘difficult conversation’ with one of his/her staff members. You will work together in pairs or small groups.

REPORT and PRESENTATION
As the direct manager of the employee in the scenario, you will prepare a Report to prepare for a conversation with the staff member using the following headings:
a) Summary of the key issues and how these relate to managing people and performance in the workplace.
b) Script for the conversation with your staff member. The simulated work experience will include role-playing the conversation.
c) Summary of the possible outcomes including possible responses from the employee to the conversation.

Your Presentation will summarise the legal and ethical considerations for each of the three stages of addressing the issue in (a) to (c) above. You will Present to a peer or your tutor

REFLECTION
A template will be provided for you to reflect on your experience undertaking the Simulation, assessing how well the team worked together, including your own input to the process and future application

Assessment Task 3: AT3: Report on Strategy for Contemporary HR
Task Description:
For this task, you are encouraged to use your own workplace or one you are familiar with to address a contemporary HR issue. Alternatively, you can research a business you are interested in or use a case study provided.

You will choose one (1) contemporary HR strategy from the following list:
1. Encouraging more socially or environmentally responsible workplace attitudes and behaviours, inclusiveness or diversity, OR
2. Increasing workplace productivity by implementing new technology systems or processes, OR
3. Moving the business to a more collaborative and innovative workplace culture where traditional operating methods are currently in use, OR
4. A contemporary issue that is current in your organisation (discuss with Unit Coordinator).
You will prepare a report to recommend a strategy to the owners of the business to identify the issues and implement the change reflecting onworkplace behaviours and perspectives that may impact on the success or failure of the strategy.

You will be provided with a template that addresses the following areas relevant to your implementation strategy utilising HR best practice strategies:
- Description of the issue being addressed
- Recommended strategy addressing organisational culture, legal and ethical considerations
- Implementation plan for the strategy
- Risks for the organisation of i) implementing the strategy and ii) not implementing the strategy.

REFLECTION
You will prepare a reflection analysing your learning and the future application of the Human Resources and People Management concepts in your future work practice. Template provided

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
 
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.
 
Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
