Unit Outline

In this unit, you will identify skill sets and knowledge required to work in a chosen industry and evaluate your own skills, attributes and learning goals to work in your chosen industry. Through case studies, workshops, online materials and tutorials, you will gain insight into your chosen industry and identify challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world. You will explore the operational and external environment of your industry, and how your industry intersects with other industries. You will also investigate the importance of planning and strategy development in managing a business. This unit also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to: - a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice - principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios - reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations - ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Assessment Task 1: AT1: Industry Scan

Task Description:

To complete your Scan, you will develop a short report, including the following:
1. Identify and review your chosen industry specialisation in a local context.
2. Compare your local industry to a national or international industry operation and identify the key differences.
3. Create an Industry Scan referring to the exemplars provided. This must include both text and graphics to effectively communicate information succinctly.
4. Your Industry Scan will use a combination of referenced sources, text and diagrams.

Assessment Task 2: AT2: Experiential Report: Workshop Activity

Task Description:

The objectives of the workshop are to:
• Engage with your focus industry/business
• Determine jobs or roles in industry/business that interest you
• Assess your current skills, behaviour, principles and perspectives against those that might be required for those jobs or roles
The workshop will involve site visits to industry/business, group work, a panel discussion (with industry) and a networking event.
You will respond to the activities of the workshop and weekly content by preparing a written report that will include:
• Site visit observation notes including (but not limited to) the following:
o Organisational structure
o Industry cluster
o Market focus (who is the customer?)
• Panel discussion summary with a focus on your industry/business
• Personal skills audit (a current snapshot)
• Professional development plan (what do you need to know or do to undertake the jobs/roles of interest)
You will be provided a template for writing the report
You will also upload the components of this report to your Practice Manual

Assessment Task 3: AT3: Presentation: Project (Local)

Task Description:

This will be your first presentation and you will be fully supported through this task. You will be presenting to your teachers not the entire cohort.
You will develop and deliver an oral presentation in which you discuss applying an organisational change to your workplace (or a local business/organisation of your choice). The change would be introduced to overcome a current challenge to the organisation, or to provide an opportunity for the organisation to improve. The change can be any one of the technological or other changes you have studied in this unit.

In preparing the presentation, you will identify and respond to key concepts relating to your workplace (or local business/organisation). You will then reflect on your own analysis of your industry and how it adjusts to the changing business environment.
You will be provided with a structured PowerPoint template to complete this task.

Online Students:
You will deliver this presentation face-to-face or via a video link (Skype for Business or Zoom) to a panel of University College teachers. You will be invited to nominate a time for this presentations task.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
