Unit Outline

English Part 2 is a core subject designed to continue on from English Part 1 to (i) promote knowledge and understanding of English language skills and techniques for future study at The University of Tasmania (ii) develop content knowledge, subject didactic knowledge and knowledge about academic learning and practice in preparation to fit the pedagogical requirements of tertiary study at The University of Tasmania (iii) expand student involvement in critical discourse (iv) develop oral language and leadership skills through active participation in group assignments and presentations for future study at The University of Tasmania.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Demonstrate understanding of the main ideas and supporting details in a range of spoken and written texts.
2.	Critically analyse a range of written texts.
3.	Participate effectively in sustained spoken academic discourse, including oral presentation.
4.	Create academic written texts that present logical and coherent argument and demonstrate paraphrasing, summarising and referencing skills.
5.	Use grammar and syntax to communicate effectively.
6.	Demonstrate range of vocabulary appropriate to academic context.
7.	Describe Australian and Tasmanian country/place, cultures, and people and compare these to the students’ own background.

Assessment Task 1: Short Story Review

Task Description:

After reading several short stories from Meet Me at the Intersection you will select one to review.

Assessment Task 2: Listening

Task Description:

You will listen to a Ted Talk and then answer a series of multiple choice and true/false questions and complete a short, written summary.

Assessment Task 3: Oral Presentation

Task Description:

You will create and present a 10-15-minute lesson in which you teach your classmates about an event in Australian history.

Assessment Task 4: Research Report

Task Description:

You will decide on a research question/hypothesis and then design a survey to test it. You will then write a 600-word report on your findings. Your report must follow the same structure as that on page 159-160 of EAP Now!

Task Description:

The exam will be an held during the examination period. More details of the structure of the paper will be discussed in class. The description/ conditions and intended learning outcomes will also be discussed in class.

Assessment Task 6: Participation

Task Description:

Your participation will be graded twice throughout the semester, just before mid-semester break and at the end of semester. You will get 1 point for each of the assessment criteria that you meet for a total score out of 10.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
