What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

This unit is a mandatory unit for students undertaking second class honours as part of the Faculty of Law Honours Program. This unit reflects the requirements for Honours contained in the Australian Quality Framework (AQF) which is binding on all Australian law schools. This unit allows students to complete a piece of research under the supervision of an academic staff member. There are no classes as such; teaching takes place through interactions between the student, their supervisor and peers, and, as needed, with the Honours Coordinator. Students select their own research topic in consultation with the Honours Coordinator. The research must be on a topic drawn from an eligible elective that they have successfully completed. Prior to commencing LAW497 Honours Research Paper, you will be asked to submit your preferences on the eligible topic areas, drawn from the LAW-coded electives offered prior to LAW497. 

This unit is the equivalent of the Honours research project that students in other degrees undertake in a separate semester or year of study. In Law, the Honours program is embedded within the curriculum and the supervised research experience is offered only to those students who are on track to graduate with second class honours. Students can confirm their eligibility to enrol in this unit with Student Services/U Connect. Second class honours candidates will take this unit alongside LAW498 Honours Research A. Together, these units support second class honours candidates to independently design, manage and deliver a major piece of academic writing (5,000-word research essay). This unit allows honours candidates to revisit an area of law that they studied as an elective, giving them an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the relevant body of law while extending their critical legal research and academic writing skills.

Assessment Task 1: Research Proposal
Task Description:
You must construct a research proposal that clearly and persuasively presents your honours research project for your final Supervised Research Paper. Your proposal should include:
• an explanation of the problem that your research paper will respond to and how it adds to existing literature;
• an outline of the research method(s) that you propose to use;
• a list of research questions;
• a timeline for completion of the research project; and
• an assessment of whether any ethical issues are raised by the project.
Your Research Proposal must be submitted to the MyLO page for LAW499 by 5pm Friday of Week 3.
Marked as pass/fail.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
