What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
Land development projects are a key component of the work program for many surveying firms. The surveyors’ role in these projects requires them to have knowledge of subdivision infrastructure in order to effectively communicate with engineers, draftspeople and planners throughout the design and construction process.
In this unit, you will be introduced to subdivision design methodologies for roads, drainage, water reticulation and sewerage systems, according to relevant Australian Standards, planning legislation and codes of practice. In the practical component of the unit, you will use relevant software to design and prepare road, water, and drainage infrastructure plans for a proposed new subdivision on a parcel of vacant land.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Prepare road and lot design for land development using specialist software.
2.
Prepare water and drainage design for land development using specialist software.
3.
Develop documentation to support your subdivision proposal with reference to relevant legislative requirements and standards.
4.
Explain the decision making process for developing a subdivision design.
Alterations as a result of student feedback
In response to the feedback from previous student cohort, changes have been made including some adjustment to assessment weightings and alignment of some of the timelines.
Revised/new workshop topics have been added in 2024 to broaden and deepen the aspects of land development covered in this unit.
As always, the teaching team will greatly appreciate your feedback both informally during the delivery of the unit, and formally through the University of Tasmania’s eVALUate surveys following your completion of the unit.

Workshop
Workshops for this unit are lead by the teaching team with support of guest lecturers from industry.

When possible, workshops will be offered in blended (online & on-campus) mode. It is expected that students living in the South of the state will attend in-person each week.

Students living in the North & North-West of the state will be informed prior to Week 1 as to online/in-person attendance schedules.

Weekly
Independent Learning
You are required to review provided materials (texts, papers, videos, webpages, etc) prior to each class. These requirements will be outlined in each week's MyLO page.

You will also be expected to review/summarise the online and in-class materials & discussions throughout the teaching period plus spend significant out-of-class time preparing your assignment submissions.

Weekly
Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

Assessment Task 1: Subdivision Plans
Task Description:
During workshops you will learn how to design a simple subdivision of a block of land that adheres to regulatory guidelines, standards and legislation.

Your portfolio will consist of 2 plans (1 for roads and lots, 1 for drainage and water) and an ~3 page summary of the decision making criteria and assumptions that influenced your subdivision design. In your summary document you must reference all relevant sections of legislation and engineering standards that guided your decision making/design.

Task Length:
You will submit: 1x Road & Lot design plan 1x Water and Drainage plan 1x Summary report outlining the decision making criteria for your design.

Assessment Task 2: Prepare Documents for Subdivision Approval
Task Description:
In this assessment you will prepare 2 short reports and your final (revised from AT1 feedback) subdivision plans.

The first report is for your client (~2 pages + plans). It will outline the work completed, mention any issues that arose and summarise the decisions that were made.

The second report is for the council that you are submitting the subdivision to for approval (~5 pages + plans). This report will explain the intent and key aspects of the submitted design, and explain how the proposal fits (or not) within the planning scheme.

Task Length:
You will submit: 1x Client Report ~ 2 pages + final design plans 1x Council Submission Report + final design plans

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.

Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
