Unit Outline

Architecture Choice Units offer students a chance to select units from a range of options that suit their personal interests and professional aspirations. All units express key aspects of our program. Learning by Making projects focus on the collaborative design, fabrication, assembly and installation of an object or space, often located in a public space. The projects are 'live' and students will usually experience direct engagement with stakeholders, including clients, engineers and local authorities. Students will use model making at a variety of scales to fully develop ideas before progressing to full-scale fabrication. Construction technologies will vary from project to project and may involve either traditional construction or digital fabrication. Workplace Heath and Safety will be an integral part of the learning in this unit.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Elaborate identified and unidentified client needs to inform the development of the project
2.	Work collaboratively with peers and stakeholders on the design and fabrication of a project to effectively leverage the diverse skill sets of a design team
3.	Fabricate models or full-scale structures to inform and develop detailed design thinking

Assessment Task 1: Prototyping

Task Description:

To be undertaken in pairs:
• Preparation of a Return Brief.
• Conceptual design thinking.
• Material research and selection
• Prototyping
• Presentation and Testing 1
Format: Prototypes, drawings and an A4 document (15%).

To be undertaken as individuals:
• Effective collaboration with studio members
• Effective communication with FEF and ELPS students
• Identification and presentation of Precedent

Assessment Task 2: Design Development and Fabrication

Task Description:

Undertaken in groups of students:
In response to feedback from clients and consultants, students will develop the AT1 design concept from to prototyping, detailing, fabrication and assembly. Students will make design decisions relating to materials and the fabrication process. Students will take some responsibility for communication with stakeholders and out-sourcing of components.

Task Length:

Large scale model, prototypes, final component set and design documentation.

Assessment Task 3: Design Report

Task Description:

Undertaken by individual students:
Compile a Design Report that will document and critically reflect on the process of design development, communication with stakeholders and consultants, prototyping, fabrication and assembly. The report will combine images, diagrams and text.

A4 PDF document.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Academic integrity

Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
