Unit Outline

This unit is designed to allow you to prepare for your tourism internship through the development of skills related to field work, empirical research, project planning and work place communication. During this unit, you will be given the opportunity to create a case for an internship project in an environmental, tourism or cultural heritage context. Once this is done you will undertake an internship at a tourism or cultural heritage business. This may be self-organised, or organised by coordinators, depending on your employment situation. You will undertake a standalone project, with defined objectives and outcomes- to be determined in consultation with managers from the business and the unit coordinator. You will be assigned an Industry Mentor from within the organisation who will support you and provide an assessment on your performance. Students wishing to undertake this unit are required to express their interest with the unit coordinator six weeks prior to the beginning of their chosen semester of study. Placement cannot be guaranteed as this will depend on the number of available internships and the suitability of the student. A select number of internships will be pre-arranged by the unit coordinator throughout the year. These internships will be matched with students who express interest in undertaking the unit and are deemed suitable by the unit coordinator. Students are also encouraged to find their own internships. If they do, six weeks notice is required prior to the commencement of the semester to give the unit coordinator adequate time to ensure the viability of the proposed internship.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Critically reflect on the knowledge and skills that are important in completing your internship.
2.	Create a plan for your internship project in the tourism or cultural heritage environment.
3.	Communicate your work using oral and written forms.

Assessment Task 1: Podcast

Task Description:

For this task, you are required to create an eight (8) minute podcast – this should be in MP3 or MP4 format. Please record and upload your podcast on to MyLO.

Assessment Task 2: Presentation of Feasibility and project plan

Task Description:

For this task, you are required to present your project plan for your internship to the class in a presentation that will last for 10 minutes. Your plan should contain the following elements:

• clearly articulated goal
• steps you will take during the internship to achieve the goal
• timelines for each of the steps
• a brief literature review that outlines the current state of knowledge in the literature and the industry regarding your topic
• a risk assessment table that addresses potential issues you many encounter during the internship, in terms of the project topic, collecting the information and within your work environment (include columns for: the risk; the impact of the risk; its likelihood; and how you predict you can mitigate the risk)
• a summary of any workplace challenges that you expect to face and how you propose to overcome them

Assessment Task 3: Peer Review Feasibility and project plan

Task Description:

For this task, your classmates are required to peer review your presentation of their project plan. Your class mates will assess the following aspects of your presentation:

• steps you will take during the internship to achieve the goal
• timelines for each of the steps
• a brief literature review that outlines the current state of knowledge in the literature and the industry regarding your topic
• a risk assessment table that addresses potential issues you many encounter during the internship, in terms of the project topic, collecting the information and within your work environment (include columns for: the risk; the impact of the risk; its likelihood; and how you predict you can mitigate the risk)
a summary of any workplace challenges that you expect to face and how you propose to overcome them

Assessment Task 4: Feasibility and project plan

Task Description:

For this task, you are required to write a 2500 word project plan for your internship. Your plan should contain the following elements:
• clearly articulated goal
• steps you will take during the internship to achieve the goal
• timelines for each of the steps
• resourcing required (if any) for the steps you will take
• a brief literature review that outlines the current state of knowledge in the literature and the industry regarding your topic
• a plan of the literature and methodological literature you will seek in order to complement and add value to the project (including style, sources, topics)
• a risk assessment table that addresses potential issues you many encounter during the internship, in terms of the project topic, collecting the information and within your work environment (include columns for: the risk; the impact of the risk; its likelihood; and how you predict you can mitigate the risk)

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
