What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

This unit equips you with the skills to produce content and tell stories across a range of media. A variety of digital tools, delivery options and conceptual approaches will be explored as you design, research and produce their content. Academic and technical staff will guide you through the production of journalism, public relations, or creative content suitable for delivery online, and as broadcast and print. Through the unit, you will be expected to develop skills in research, writing, online publication and audio and visual production.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Critically assess and evaluate the social, cultural and political role of digital media storytelling in a dynamic and global communication environment.
2.
Design digital storytelling projects by applying and integrating strategies across a variety of relevant platforms.
3.
Communicate effectively across a variety of media platforms, including video, print and other online networks.
4.
Critically evaluate and discuss your media production experiences across multiple platforms in the context of key concepts in media and communication.

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. Assessment details
Assessment Task 1: Project Proposal and Oral Presentation
Task Description:
For this assessment, we ask you to make a six-minute spoken presentation on your proposal for a multi-platform project. The presentation will be made in class and you should create an accompanying audio-visual component (eg: PowerPoint slides, online resources, short video) that outlines your initial ideas. You will then respond to questions and feedback from fellow students and the unit coordinator.

Assessment Task 2: Project Briefing Document
Task Description:
Drawing on your pitch in assessment one, write a briefing document communicating your ideas for your multi-platform project.

You will need to identify the intended audience of your document, such as an employer, a potential sponsor, or for the purposes of applying for funding.

The report will need to analyse your project, identifying factors such as intended audience, messages and choice of platforms to communicate through.

Assessment Task 3: Multi-platform Media Project
Task Description:
For this assessment, you are to develop a short story and communicate it effectively across a variety of THREE media platforms, which can include video, audio, print, social media and other digital media.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
