Unit Outline

This unit (FCP120) is the second of two University Connections Program music units for year 11/12 students aimed at providing an intensive course of study in performance or composition designed to build skills to allow a successful audition into the Bachelor of Music Degree.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Use foundational technical skills, musicality and stylistic expression in performance or folio
2.	Execute instrumental or vocal technique in your music practice
3.	Describe the historical, musical or social context, repertoire or practices relevant to your own creative practice.
4.	Communicate reflections on your achievements in written and oral modes to develop your creative practice
5.	Apply preparation skills including practice regimes, scheduling, communication, rehearsal attendance and logistics to perform a program of music

Assessment Task 1: Written or video reflections

Task Description:

Reflective Practice Assignment 1A and 1B

Complete two written or video reflections:

1A: Study professional instrumentalists in your field, and examine and discuss how they choose and perform their repertoire. Discuss the artist/s and their performance/s in relation to how this relates to your own practice and musical performance/composition goals.

1B: Mid-year performance/composition presentation reflection. Reflect on your own mid-year performance/composition presentation, and how this experience might impact your preparation for your final performance or composition folio assessment

Assessment Task 2: Research Assignment

Task Description:

In this assignment you will investigate and describe the historical context/s, analytical elements and stylistic considerations of 2/3 pieces selected from your chosen performance repertoire OR the specific composed works that you have based your compositions on.
You should consider the following questions:
· How do the historical context/s, analytical elements and stylistic considerations of the pieces I have selected influence my own playing?
· What is musicality, and how do I develop it and then use it in ‘performance’ or ‘composition’?

Appropriate research and referencing techniques must be used in the final presentation of this assessment task.

Draft due 7 July 2024 for feedback; Final draft due Term 3, End week 2

Assessment Task 3: Mid-year Recital/Presentation

Task Description:

Performance: Mid-year Recital of musical works, or presentation of a folio of musical compositions. You will perform a musical and technically assured folio of musical works
Composition strand: Mid-year Presentation of a folio of original musical works.
In this assignment you will give a work-in-progress presentation of your compositions/creative works. You will demonstrate the development of your musical skill as performer or composer. The focus of this assessment task is to provide you with formative feedback through a conversation with the assessment panel at the conclusion of the performance/presentation. You will also receive written feedback to help you develop your musical skills.

Assessment Task 4: Performance: End of year Recital; Composition strand: End of year Presentation

Task Description:

Composition strand: End of year Presentation
In this assignment you will present a performance of a folio of your advancing musical practice. You will demonstrate the development of your musical skill as performer or composer.
This will be accompanied by a set of musical program notes comprising:
·Names of pieces of music, composers’ names, dates of compositions/publication, duration, and order of pieces, a short biography and an acknowledgement section

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
