What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

The unit aims to provide civil and mechanical engineering students with the tools necessary to systematically select appropriate materials for a particular application. This process will build upon knowledge of fundamental material properties to enable students to identify appropriate materials for a given application. In addition to selecting materials based on their mechanical properties, this unit will aim to provide students with an understanding of how materials are processed into the forms required by a design and how processing can feed back into material selection and design. This unit will also address specialist topics relevant to mechanical and civil engineers including durability, the environmental implications of material selection, and how to address material selection when there are multiple competing objectives.

Assessment Task 1: Material Selection Project
Task Description:
Students will be given a design scenario for which they will nominate a suitable material. This includes justifying the selected material in terms of a range of material factors including, but not limited to material properties, environmental impacts, and economic considerations.

Assessment Task 2: Emerging Materials Project
Task Description:
Students will be given a design scenario for which they will be tasked with identifying an emerging material to be used. This includes justifying the selected material in terms of a range of material factors including, but not limited to material properties, environmental impacts, and economic considerations. As part of this assessment, they will assess the current state of development of this material to identify potential challenges to application in this context.

Assessment Task 3: In Semester Tests
Task Description:
Two open-book tests (50 minutes each) will be completed during the semester (Weeks 7 and 13). These tests will be equally weighted. The types of questions may include calculation of material properties and explanation of concepts.

Assessment Task 4: Laboratory Reports
Task Description:
Students will complete three laboratories to investigate the properties of materials and explore material selection. Students are required to write a lab report for each of the lab tasks that are due in Weeks 6,8, and 10. Labs will be conducted during the semester as per timetabling.

4-6 A4 pages per report including diagrams and tables.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
