What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

This unit familiarises students with concrete theory, and the analysis and design of concrete structures. Students will be using Australian Standards in addition to Limit Sate Design to determine the loads and load combinations and then analyse and design concrete members for strength and serviceability. This whole design process is taught using a real world structure. Students will also be expected to use computer- aided design facilities and structural analysis applications for the design, optimisation and documentation of concrete projects.

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Use concrete theory to analyse the behaviour of common concrete members under different loads
2
Design concrete members for strength and servicabilty in accordance with Australian Standards
3
Optimise the design of concrete structures by applying  new developments and techniques in reinforced concrete

Assessment Task 1: Design Project (Part 1)
Task Description:
The design project will require you to use the standards and the structural design methods to determine the loads on an advanced reinforced concrete structure and analyse/design all its members. For different parts of the project (Parts 1, 2 and 3) you will be required to analyse and design different members of the same structure/building. Details of the structure and its members will be confirmed in class. Multiple individual consultations will be made available through MyLO announcements to assist with project completion and to allow for timely feedback. Attendance of at least one consultation per project is mandatory.

Task Description:

Assessment Task 3: Design Project (Part 3)
Task Description:
The design project will require you to use the standards and the structural design methods to determine the loads on an advanced reinforced concrete structure and analyse/design all its members. For different parts of the project (Parts 1, 2 and 3) you will be required to analyse and design different members of the same structure/building. Details of the structure and its members will be confirmed in class.

The submission must include an individual 3-page reflective summary to critically reflect upon the role you have played during the design project. You will need to comment on the team dynamic, the role you have played and how performance could be improved for future projects in future units or real-world projects.

Multiple individual consultations will be made available through MyLO announcements to assist with project completion and to allow for timely feedback. Attendance of at least one consultation per project is mandatory.

Assessment Task 4: Quiz 1 and Quiz 2
Task Description:
Due in weeks 3 and 5. In this assessment task, you will apply the knowledge and skills obtained during lectures and tutorials to perform complex analysis and design of a non-standard concrete member (details to be given in class).

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
