Unit Outline

This unit of study aims to provide you with practical engineering experience in an environment outside the University and improve your awareness of the issues associated with professional practice. In so doing, it will ensure your perceptions of engineering during your studies develop alongside the realities of practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Produce a job application package responding to an advertised engineering position description containing selection criteria.
2.	Evidence pre-employment and networking skills in order to apply for a work placement with an engineering enterprise.
3.	Compare and contrast the operation of engineering companies by engaging with professional engineers.
4.	Extrapolate the importance of interpersonal skills in the workplace by critically reflecting on personal past experiences.

Assessment Task 1: Retrospective review

Task Description:

The student is required to create a retrospective report which reflects on their past experiences and how they use their personal skills to resolve them. Students are required to address all 6 professional and personal attributes listed in the Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies standard.

Assessment Task 2: Prepare a job application

Task Description:

The objective of this assignment is to prepare a job application package. Your task is to search media sources and find a current engineering role (volunteer, internship or graduate position)
advertisement of your choice. The advertisement of choice must include a selection criteria requirement which you need to address. Your task is to create a job application as if you were seeking employment with this company/institution. The application must include:
1. Resume
2. Letter of Application (Cover Letter)
3. Response to Selection Criteria

Assessment Task 3: Interview skills development

Task Description:

Students are required to register on Career Connect platform and access various resources. The assessment uses the "built-in interview" function of Career Connect to record student's responses to various questions. The platform provides the ability to answer questions and review your recordings. This is treated as a real interview, so students are required to dress and conduct themselves professionally. This includes body language, language use and demeanour.

Assessment Task 4: Professional network development

Task Description:

The students are required to populate a provided template where they record their networking with industry. In this assessment you will need to report on various events/workshops/seminars/webinars where you engaged industries on their business and enterprise management. It is recommend the students start working on the assessment after the introduction lecture in week 1.

Assessment Task 5: Industry assessment report

Task Description:

Students are expected to compile an industrial assessment report where they compare and contrast two or more businesses on the information collected during the semester. Using information collected from engineering practices, business operations and duties of engineers by engaging various engineering industries through seminars, webinars, workshops and personal schedule meeting.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
