Unit Outline

The aim of this unit is for leaders to examine the complexity of leadership in a period of rapid and disruptive change, and to develop their self-understanding of personal leadership behaviours. The unit analyses the nexus between management and leadership in the workplace and how an evidenced-based knowledge of self can contribute to building leadership capacity. A 360 degree Feedback Leadership Profile contributes to the examination of personal leadership and provides a pathway for exploring leadership growth through an action research project undertaken in the workplace. The unit is relevant to leaders who are committed to supporting on-going learning for themselves, their professional colleagues and their organisations.

Please note that the Summer school offering of this unit is restricted to students enrolled in the DECYP Leadership program.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of adult learning principles
2.	Critically reflect on learning from the Leadership Starts from Within program and relevant literature
3.	Articulate a critically defensible personal leadership approach and how that will inform own practice
4.	Demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, implement, analyse and reflect upon a workplace leadership project
5.	Demonstrate the ability to communicate in written and oral forms in a scholarly and appropriate manner

Assessment Task 1: Satisfactory participation in coursework

Task Description:

You are required to complete all activities and tasks in the Leadership Starts from Within course, participating fully in the 4 days of the workshops during the year and facilitating an inquiry related to leadership in your local context – this will bring together ideas from the articles from the course, your 360 degree feedback and your educational approach.

Satisfactory participation in and completion of the Leadership Starts from Within course is a pre-requisite for students undertaking the unit.

ILO1 and ILO4 are addressed through participation in the DECYP Tasmania Professional Learning Institute’s Leadership Starts from Within program.

Assessment Task 2: Critical Reflection

Task Description:

Drawing on your experiences in the Leadership Starts from Within course, the information gathered in your working folio and with reference to relevant literature, critically reflect on your learning from your inquiry and how it has helped you consolidate a personal leadership approach. You will be assessed on how well you are able to analyse and synthesise your knowledge to effectively communicate and critically defend your personal leadership approach.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
