What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
Speech Pathology Practice 3 continues to extend your core knowledge and application of concepts and skills developed in previous units and/or concurrently in Optimising Communication and Swallowing 3 and 4, and Developing as Allied Health Collaborators. You will integrate and apply your understanding and skills in on-campus intensive workshops and within practice education placements in either a paediatric, adult or mixed practice context. Throughout the learning activities and the practice education placement, you will focus on person and family-centredness, biopsychosocial models of practice, clinical reasoning, self-reflection, critical thinking, cultural responsiveness, and evidence-based practice. You will develop a range of communication and swallowing assessment and management skills across the lifespan. During your practice education placement you will receive moderate levels of support from your practice educator/s, in practice contexts where you have moderate levels of familiarity, and where there are moderate levels of complexity.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Provide evidence-based, person-centred and responsive speech pathology practice in situations involving a moderate degree of complexity, familiarity and levels of support.
2.
Plan and administer contextually appropriate assessments and demonstrate clinical reasoning to synthesise, interpret, and report assessment findings independently, in either an adult, paediatric or mixed practice context.
3.
Plan, implement and evaluate intervention or service responses independently, in either an adult, paediatric or mixed practice context.
4.
Achieve respectful partnerships and collaboration in situations involving a moderate degree of complexity, familiarity and levels of support.
5.
Critically reflect and evaluate own performance and learning to inform ongoing professional development and life-long learning in situations involving a moderate degree of complexity, familiarity and levels of support.

Alterations as a result of student feedback
In response to student feedback the professional experience placement (PEP) has been changed to a 2-day/week placement over 10 weeks rather than a 3-day/week placement over 6 weeks. This change aims to distribute the time commitment required for placement and allow a more balanced workload throughout the semester.
A Speech Pathology Skills assessment has also been removed in 2024 and these skills will now be practised within learning activities in the Residential Schools.
The residential schools have been rescheduled to have more time in between the two on-campus weeks. This aims to allow more online content to be completed and then followed up with interactive application activities in the residential schools.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online or includes online activities, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline or MyLO, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

It is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. Please refer to the Speech Pathology Practice Education Handbook for information about attendance requirements for placement and how to document any absences from placement.

How will I be Assessed?

Submission of the critical reflection is a compulsory hurdle task that must be completed at a pass standard to achieve an overall pass result in this unit. You will have an opportunity to resubmit if you do not meet the required level of competency.
Task Length:
Critical reflection: 1000 words

Assessment Task 2: Assessment of Speech Pathology Practice
Task Description:
You will complete 20 days of practice education in either a paediatric or adult speech pathology practice context. To be awarded an ungraded pass for this placement, you are expected to demonstrate at least ‘intermediate’ level competency overall on COMPASS® and ‘intermediate’ level of competency across the Professional Competencies and the CBOS competencies. No competencies can remain in the ‘novice’ range. There needs to be evidence of progression of competency along the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at end-placement assessment when compared with mid-way COMPASS (on competencies where there has been opportunity).

Assessment Task 3: Case presentation and clinical viva
Task Description:
This individual oral examination will follow the completion of the paediatric or adult practice education placement. You will submit a written case summary of a client you have worked with during your placement using a standard template. This written information will be submitted one week before the exam and is not assessed but will be used to select appropriate questions to assess your clinical reasoning. In the oral exam students you will present a 2-minute case presentation and then respond to questions from two speech pathologists regarding your assessment and/or management of the client.
Before the viva begins you will be presented with case information about an unfamiliar client. You will have 20 minutes to read and think about the case information before answering questions from the two examiners about your clinical reasoning regarding assessment or management planning for this client. This unfamiliar case will be from a different population (adult/paediatric) to the prepared case.
This is a compulsory hurdle task that must be completed at a pass standard to achieve an overall pass result in this unit. If you do not meet the required level of competency you will be given an opportunity to re-attempt the task.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes and pass all assessment tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.
Academic integrity
Academic integrity is about acting responsibly, honestly, ethically, and collegially when using, producing, and communicating information with other students and staff members.

In written work, you must correctly reference the work of others to maintain academic integrity. To find out the referencing style for this unit, see the assessment information in the MyLO site, or contact your teaching staff. For more detail about Academic Integrity, see
Important Guidelines & Support.
Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.
Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
