What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
 

This is a practical unit providing you with an overview of public health nutrition principles and practices. You will develop an understanding of public health nutrition priorities such as obesity prevention; economic, geographically and socially disadvantaged communities; international nutrition; food systems and food safety legislation referring to legal and regulatory considerations as appropriate. This unit includes a practical component dealing with food handling, food hygiene and cooking principles within a community setting. You will also have the opportunity to work on a community nutrition project within a small group in this unit.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Develop skills in community and public health nutrition advocacy by researching an emerging issue and communicate to influence decision-makers.
2.
Analyse a community and public health nutrition issue and design potential solutions to improve the health outcomes of a diverse community.
3.
Critically reflect on your knowledge, beliefs and values, whilst undertaking professional experience in a community setting.
4.
Communicate using appropriate, discipline specific terminology, in both written and verbal styles to difference audiences.

Assessment Task 1: Advocacy Discussion Paper.
Task Description:
Research and write an advocacy discussion paper to a key decision-maker to make the case for funding or change to policies to address a public health nutrition issue. The following points must be included in your report. 1) Clearly identify the problem that needs solving; 2) Consider the key decision maker that would direct your advocacy discussion paper and write and formulate your discussion paper for that audience; 3) Gather information and evidence about this issue - what is known, what has been identified as an effective intervention to address the issue, what has not worked, what are the economic implications. Refer to Mylo for further details on how to complete this assessment task.

Assessment Task 2: Reflective Journal
Task Description:
You will complete a reflective journal following your Work Integrated Learning (WIL) within a community setting using a reflective writing framework or model appropriate to your discipline. The Reflective Journal is important for building your reflective practice skills. This reflective journal will detail your experiences and personal reflections of your professional placement. Further details are available in MyLO.

Assessment Task 3: Presentation
Task Description:
This is a group assessment task, and you are required to work with your group members focussing on a current community and public health nutrition issue which has been allocated to your group. Each issue has been designed to provide you with practical experience in community and public health nutrition.

You are required to prepare and deliver a fifteen-minute presentation with five minutes for questions. You are also required to provide an abstract that summarizes your group activities. Your individual contribution to this group presentation will also be assessed. Each member of the group will present a portion of the presentation. Refer to MyLO for details of the topic and presentation requirements.

Task Description:

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
