Unit Outline

This unit introduces students to the healthcare redesign methodology and its process. Students will learn about effective redesign methods, theories, and frameworks in a global context to prepare them to initiate healthcare redesign in practice. Students will learn about evaluating initiatives and human and relational factors in complex people centred environments. Students will be educated about broader system issues and reform such as timelier care, better access, and more efficient use of healthcare and other resources. There will be a focus on system efficiency, better patient experience, patient journey, value-adding healthcare, and evaluation.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:


1.	Examine the purpose of Healthcare Redesign locally, nationally, and globally.
2.	Evaluate the application of evidence-based knowledge and skills within diverse contexts to improve health service delivery.
3.	Describe, critique, and analyse the theories, frameworks and concepts used in healthcare redesign.
4.	Explain and appraise the healthcare redesign tools and techniques commonly used in the healthcare setting and determine their appropriate applications.
5.	Identify and develop strategies for collective engagement in the healthcare redesign process.

Assessment Task 1: ACI-NSW Project Management Plan (ACI-NSW Cohort only)

Task Description:

This assessment task is to be completed by ACI-NSW Special programs students only and is the sole assessment piece for this cohort.

The Project Management Plan outlines the project design, plan and scope that will guide successful implementation of the redesign initiative. The project plan is generally developed in consultation with the project team, Steering Committee and Redesign Leaders and signed off by the Project Sponsor/s.
After each face-to-face workshop there should be a focus on developing the chosen initiative and putting new skills and knowledge into practice. Project teams are actively supported by local Redesign Leaders, and their Sponsor/s to develop the project management plan in local templates.

Contributes 100% of Total Mark.

Assessment Task 2: Online Assessment

Task Description:

There are 2 on-line quizzes (5% each) within this unit. Each quiz includes multiple choice questions which cover the topics discussed during the semester. You will be able to access the quizzes on-line at least 5 days before the due date. Quiz 1 – focuses on learning topics in week 1 - 4 Quiz 2 – focuses on learning topics in week 5 - 10

Assessment Task 3: Change Management Presentation

Task Description:

You are required to present a narrated PowerPoint or poster presentation (approximately 20 minutes) reflecting on your experience of a change process within your workplace. Identify and describe the utilised change management framework and/or communication tools. How well were the tools were applied and consider whether other techniques may have been more effective and why, and where possible make links to the literature.

Assessment Task 4: Reflective Portfolio

Critically reflect on how you have met the intended learning outcomes of the unit, using examples of learning to support your reflection.

Assessment Task 5: Literature Critique

Task Description:

Critique an article (choice of three, located in the resources section) that describes the implementation and evaluation of a health service improvement initiative.

Outline the Healthcare Redesign, evaluation methodology and frameworks utilised. Identify any gaps in the evaluation and suggest what could have been done differently, drawing on the relevant literature.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
