What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This unit provides a framework for understanding the links between knowledge and practice. It is about considering the when, why and, importantly, how of translational research in practice. It is also designed to encourage the development of the capacity of health service leaders to identify and evaluate emerging knowledge relevant to their practice, and to implement change based on this knowledge within their sphere of influence.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Demonstrate knowledge of translational research principles and their relevance to own practice
2.
Appraise evidence and analyse the gaps between evidence-based practice and own practice
3.
Discuss barriers and formulate strategies that can be used to translate research into practice
4.
Apply the principles of knowledge translation to examine key factors that influence the adoption of research in your context.

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

Assessment Task 1: Discussion board participation and task submission
Task Description:
The Discussion Board is an important forum that promotes interaction and discussion between you and your fellow students. Online studies can be isolating if there is no contact with other students. In this unit, you are required to interact with fellow students through the Discussion Board. During the modules, there are some questions and discussion topics for you to discuss on the Discussion Board. These questions often provide a springboard for other questions/issues to be raised.
In addition to interacting on the Discussion Boards, you are also required to submit some TWO brief assessment tasks.

The first discussion board will be due in week 5
The second discussion board will be due in week 10

Assessment Task 2: Literature review
Task Description:
In this assessment, you are to identify an issue in your workplace where evidence from research has either not been put into practice or has not been effectively implemented, and then facilitate a discussion about this issue with at least 2 other colleagues in your workplace to explore any shared concerns and suggestions about how to address it.
PART A: using the identified issue you have discussed with your colleagues, write a summary of the discussions, from your observations and from the research literature to present this issue as an activity or innovation
PART B: Provide a critical review of the literature that justifies implementation of this activity or innovation. (note – you are encouraged to come up with an issue from your workplace, but if this proves difficult please refer to Module 1 for examples of issues you might wish to address)

Assessment Task 3: Critical reflective journal
Task Description:
Thinking now as a leader, and focussing on the activity/innovation you identified in Assessment task 2, write an account of how you would go about promoting the transfer of the research findings and the knowledge you have gained into your workplace. In your answer you need to include the potential barriers to change and the strategies you could use to overcome these, making reference to the literature on translational research.

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to submit each assignment and demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieving a final unit grade of 50% or greater
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
