Unit Outline

This unit is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical attachments. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council, AMC, medical student outcomes. This unit is integrated with the programme in the following year of the course. Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues and will be delivered by a mixture of learning opportunities and will require self-directed learning approaches. The MBBS curriculum uses the AMC 4 domains as an organising principle under which the outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner), Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader), Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate), and Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar) . On completion of CAM524 students receive an IC (Interim Completion) result. A final result is granted on completion of CAM525. Note: Students are required to enrol concurrently in CAM524 and CAM525. In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the College of Health and Medicine and Tasmanian School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

Alterations as a result of student feedback

Evaluations are to be undertaken on behalf of academic staff members by the Student Evaluation, Review and Reporting Unit (SERRU) as part of the eVALUate process.
Additionally, feedback may be sought by clinical schools from students via focus groups or their own evaluation surveys. Student feedback is important to the continuous quality improvement of this Unit.
In response to student feedback from 2022, the following changes have been made to this unit:

• Online learning opportunities have been enhanced with ongoing development of the online SoM Learning Management System (SoM LMS). Further development of the platform content and structure to continue.
• Statewide briefing and feedback for major assessment tasks are scheduled throughout the year using Zoom
• Development of further assessment preparation materials (e.g. Portfolio preparation advice), available on the LMS
• Adjustments to summative assessment calendar
• Adjustments to assessment tasks: 1) Removal student-led CBL tasks as mandatory assessment activities; 2) Introduction of multisource professionalism feedback form as component of portfolio; 3) Modification of Mini-CEX requirements to incorporate the use of ACCLAiM Workplace-Based Assessments; 4) Move of Written Long Case Assessment Task from CAM524 to CAM525;

Assessment Task 1: Portfolio Assessment

Task Description:

The portfolio demonstrates the programmatic assessment of students’ learning across the clinical years. The portfolio contains both individual summative and “Other Unit Requirements” aspects of assessment. “Other Unit Requirements” assessment activities must be attempted and assessed as satisfactory in order to pass the overall Portfolio component of assessment for the year. All components of the portfolio as listed below are common to all Clinical Schools.

Portfolio assessment requirements:
Clinical skills log, case reports, reflective writing, workplace-based assessments (including mini-clinical examination assessments), oral presentation assessments, multisourced professionalism feedback.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes.

Your grade will be determined in the following way:

The result awarded for this unit is an interim completion (IC) or assessment ongoing (AO).

To achieve an interim completion (IC), students must have a satisfactory grade for the following two Hurdle Task components:
• Portfolio assessment due
• Written reflection

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
